This first episode was totally intense! Really loved the whole atmosphere and I just can't get enough of these old classics!

Totally entertaining first episode. It's definitely made for kids, but this 41 year old adult still got a good glow watching it. It's action packed, has fun characters and reminds me of simpler times.

The first part of this - the stuff with the Giant Turtle - was bad, bad, bad. Bad animation, no discernable story, wafer-thin characterisation and did I mention it was bad? Yes, it was 1972 and that was an excuse for the animation. But I'm watching it today, nostalgia isn't why I'm watching, and there was no excuse for the lack of plot. But for old times' sake, I gave it a second go, and I'm glad I did. It's still not great, but there's just enough plot in the second part - the Monstrous Aircraft Carrier - to keep me watching. (Although I didn't see a single aircraft on board, it was all submarines carried on the big one. But there's no word in English for that either.)

Man, I hope "Ulysses 31" holds up better than this.

Just want to say for any new people reading this, I recommend the English dub of this show for some delightful cheese. The subs and the dub are just as bad, but the dub is entertainingly bad, the subs are just mediocre subtitles.

Better art and production than Gundam.

I watched this as a kid as "Battle of the Planets".

Whats wrong with the animation though? Could you please elaborate? I think it was smooth, and design of that turtle itself is very detailed, maybe this artstyle is just not your thing?

To be fair, this episode was very much decent. Some people think it's probably really great but in my opinion the best part of Gatchaman had to be around the further episodes. This one is a little boring but a great start

Very good and thrilling start for such an old show. animation was way better than I expected for that time period. We'll see if it's that waz only for the pilot episode, or if they can mantain this level for the entire series.
