Yeah, I saw it this morning. Although, I am not really that great when it more to commenting and reviewing movies...

There were not really any surprises in my opinion. The main parts of the plot are shown in the trailer and I think it gives quite an accurate picture of the final result, i.e. a character driven story about the growth of a boy that makes some unusual friends. Maybe it could be called a coming-of-age story, I am not sure. Either way it was a good movie that did well in all major departments (music, story, character, animation etc.).

But maybe that didn't really answer your question?

Watched it just some hours ago. Since my Japanese level is still somewhat lacking, I guess I understood between 50% and 70% of the movie. The only other movie I watched in cinemas, Baymax, was way easier to understand. I will definitely have to rewatch it with subtitles - so around next year (Japan's video releases are horrible).

I try to make it as spoiler free as possible:

What I can say is that I might had too high expectations for this movie. After Ookami Kodomo, I hoped for an even better movie. What can I say, I got disappointed, although just slightly. The art is great, the sound as well, the characters and their interactions are the biggest selling point. The setting is compelling and the plot is good, but I feel the execution is somewhat lacking. It felt a bit like Summer Wars all over again - which I see as the worst out of all of Hosoda's four movies (though still good). Summer Wars lost so many points for that weird virtual reality segment while the reality parts were really good. Likewise, the beast realm segment felt very 08/15 Fantasy and got interesting through the human realm. In both movies, the "final battles" (if you can call them that way) were weird and could have been executed way better.

Anyway, it's still an above average movie.

just finished watch it too, really good for me.
it's difficult for me to understand Summer Wars even I watched it in sub but Bakemono no Ko is easier to understand even in raw, at least a bit logical fantasy(?) rather than Summer Wars, final battle scene may look weird but the art is really good, the parent and child interaction is good too that it made me cry, recommended. :')

I'm living in Japan currently and saw this movie in theaters. I enjoyed the beautiful fantasy setting it created and the memorable characters. This film was not overly concerned with creating a highly detailed, fleshed out fantasy world or a complex plot, but rather the heart of the movie was in the characters, how they interacted and grew. With that in mind, I could understand why the climax of the movie felt rushed and haphazard from the perspective of plot, as it was more focused on the culmination of the character's emotional development. I don't want to give anything away, so I'll just say that while Bakemono no Ko didn't quite have the emotional force of Wolf Children, I still recommend it as a highly enjoyable film.

Since my Japanese isn't perfect, I'm refraining from giving a score or full review until I can watch the movie with English subs.

I came to Japan to travel and found out it's still in theater XD, so I watched it, along with the new Naruto movie. I understood about 70% since this is still the second year after I started learning Japanese. The film wasn't as good as I expected. I feel the plot is rushed and am a little disappointed since I expected more kaede x kyuuta moments at the end :(. It is still very good and definitely worth watching. Summer wars is still my favorite though.

It's so sad because it is scored badly :( I am fluent in japanese so I can understand it. I feel like the score should be above 8 for sure. If only more people knew japanese...

Saw this at the BFI film festival yesterday. Was quite disappointed actually, for reasons I've already read above. The plot felt rushed, the characters one dimensional and the overall world lacked depth. The main antagonist appeared out of nowhere towards the end for no other reason than the plot needed him to.

It's a shame, as I thought the film was really strong when it was about a boy looking for strength and being trained by the beast while the two of them developed a father / son relationship. Then the film became really messy and unfocused when the boy suddenly decided he wanted to return to the human world and learn to read.

The film is beautiful though, which single handily took it from a 6 to a 7 in my ratings. It's definitely the directors weakest work though.

Also, I loved Summer Wars - why the hate here?!

The things I love most about Hosoda's work is the intimacy that he conveys in his works. There is a intimate feeling in The girl who Leapt Through TIme and there is that subtle and forlorn feeling of sadness in growing up and abandoning the lifestyle you love at this point in time. Its not spoonfed too you, but rather it is shown in every frame and I felt that. I also felt that intimate and emotional feeling in Wolf Children. But with Summer Wars, it felt way too much of a generic fantasy anime with no real emotional attachment too it. Its not bad, but easily my least favorite of his.

Excited for this one though.

this film really weak in third arc playing a whole shounen cliche pretty uninspiration for such standalone film.chemistry between heroin not really good and fight scene not really look good either i don't like adult mc voice.
some element leave without explanation but i'm ok with that because it's not primely focus. despite really weak third arc and some jarring jump back and front during middle film issue it still soild film that still be entertainment on it owns.

score 7.5/10

ps. i really don't expect to see english subtitle since previously film like wolf children doesn't have it.
