She gazed at the horizon, completely enthralled by the setting sun. For her, it was the beginning of new life. With her arch-enemy behind bars, Shion felt safe. Ayumi walked up to her from behind and put his jacket onto her shoulders, before placing the picnic basket they both had brought. It was their first official date and they wanted to enjoy it. Shion took a fried shrimp out and began eating it while staring at the sunset. Ayumi joined her.
"It reminds me of the time when we first met. The sun shone like this back then too."
"I know," Shion replied "But I couldn't exactly enjoy it, you know?"
Ayumi just nodded. It was wrong, but Shion was lucky that he was around. Maybe he was around because of her. His mother once told him about the red thread of fate and how it connects people that were meant to be under unusual circumstances. But that couldn't be himself and Shion. How could it? He was lying for his own gain, while she cared about others rather than herself.
"But then again," a small voice in his head chimed in, "you were doing it for someone else too: your mother. You might not be so different."
Ayumi shook his head, trying to get these thoughts out of his head.
"Ayumi-kun?" Shion whispered, her voice sounding concerned
"Shion....." he trailed off "This is goodbye."
He picked up the basket with the leftovers and began walking away. He could feel her looking at him. But it was better this way. She deserved better.
"You know, " the small voice in his head chided "that you want her. If you don't use this chance, someone else might snatch her away. The only person that cared for you and your family will belong to someone else. Make a move." |
