Do I Need to read the novel before watching this?

I don't clearly know what an OVA is and so since this "series" is marked as an OVA, I'm not really sure if I have to read the novel before watching this. From what I know, OVAs come after the series end? And so from my definition, is this something that can be watched just alone or is it more enjoyable after reading the novel? c:
