It is a bit too early for me to be sure. However, at the moment, it appears that
this series is extremely unpopular in Japan. Hardly anybody is pre-ordering the
Blu-rays or the DVDs.
Here are the "Amazon Stalker points" as of 8:00 am, Saturday, April 11th in
Tokyo:
Volume 1 06/24 Blu-ray = 307, DVD = 278
Volume 2 07/24 Blu-ray = 232, DVD = 104
Volume 3 08/26 ...
...
Based on my experience looking at these numbers, they seem really, really bad.
I might even say awful. Of course, it is possible that they will pick up with time.
But in fact, "Amazon Stalker points" quite often go down with time.
Is it possible that a lot of Japanese viewers got turned off by the fact that
Episode 1 apparently started off as a Yuri genre story? After all, there was
basically no warning. There was only a very brief hint on the official website.
I don't mind Yuri stories. It is among my favorite genres. On the other hand,
I don't like it when a story turns out to have an entirely different genre from
what I expected. In my case, I really don't like it when I start to watch a
series thinking that it is a high-school-based harem romance, only to later
see that it was actually a psychological horror story with explicit gruesome
violence. Also, I don't like it when a horrible insect-like monster suddenly
appears and eats somebody.
I am not suggesting there is anybody who is homophobic or intolerant here
on the threads for this series. If anything, it's been the opposite. But there are
some days when one feels like watching a Yuri story and other days when one
wants to watch a different genre. I always look very carefully at the genre of a
series before I start to watch it.
Basically, "serious" Yuri anime series have been business failures since the
middle of 2009, if not earlier. These are sometimes called "Central-element
Yuri"*. "Yurikuma Arashi", which just finished, was only getting about 900
Amazon Stalker points for the BDs and DVDs. That was likely an economic
disaster for the studio.
By comparison, the extremely popular series "Shirobako" was getting around
8000 Amazon Stalker points. Typical normal series get 2000 to 3000 or so.
A basic rule of being the director of an anime series is that you should not
alienate half of your audience in the first five minutes.
