Manga vs Anime

Can anyone who read the manga tell me if there's any major reason to read it? I mean, is there a story developing in the manga past the one related in the anime (including OVAs). For example, do they confirm there are more sea-girls out there, like Kozue Tanabe(octo-girl)? Does she play a bigger role in the manga? Or do Goro and Chizuru get together? Do we get more story about Ika Musume's origins?Stuff like that.

Or is the manga just like the anime, with episodic whacky fun, at which point the anime is good enough to enjoy and manga does not add much.
