I've seen the 2004 film, Ex Machina, and Appleseed XIII. I found all of them to be disappointments, with XIII being the worst. I literally only watched that series just to hear Luci Christian and David Matranga, but I was ready to fall asleep throughout 75% of that series.

Appleseed Alpha, however, is easily the best of everything I've seen of this franchise. Two Horns was hilarious in nearly everything he did. The voice acting in this whole film was excellent. The animation was incredible. Talos and Nix were gorgeous and some of the sleekest and most eye-poppingly beautiful mech designs I've ever seen. The attention to detail paid throughout the movie was impressive: I certainly didn't think, for instance, that the bullet holes in a wall caused by some missed shots could actually wind up being important in the end.

I even liked how some things were left ambiguous. The cyborg attack at the beginning, for instance. It was never made quite clear whether Two Horns was behind that or not. The malfunctioning microchip that was weakening Briarieos was never quite explained, but Deunan and Bri did discuss whether Matthews could have done it. In the end, they more or less shrug their shoulders and leave it as "it's possible." I liked that.

The scavenger world aspect was probably what drew me in the most. I never really liked the Olympus setting, so it was a pretty nice change of pace. The visual contrast between the grungy cyborgs of Two Horn's gang and the high-tech, professional cyborgs of Talos was striking.

I'd give this film an 8.5/10.

I thought Ex Machina was a solid film but this is probably the best. Two Horns was a very good character alright. I wasn't particularly fond in the change of Deunan's design though.

I've never watched an Appleseed movie before, I was just roped into watching this. Everything about the movie was great, besides the character development. It just didn't make any sense. The girl (Iris I think her name was) went from paranoid to trusting in a split second. Whenever Olsen died, Deunan was concerned whether or not they could save Iris, but she was swayed by a half-assed speech. I know it was from someone she loved, but come on. I don't feel like Two Horns should have done what he did in the end. The two still owed him a lot, and it doesn't fit his character to just forget about that cause they almost died, and even do them a favor.
Although, one thing I do want to say, is that they were heartless killing people off. If they made the characters better, it would've been an incredibly sad movie.
