Jeremy rappelled down the side of the library. It was a towering ten story building that had somehow survived the destruction of the last 30 years. It had become completely shrouded in nature as it sat on the side of the giant destroyed city which had been taken over by it. 10 years ago he remembers it as the place Jack brought and raised him. This was the only home he knew and as such it was completely secure on the inside. So much so that he needed to rappel down to leave. As he got to the ground he pulled on the rope, in turn making the knot come loose. He packed the rope away and set out beginning to crawl and stalk his way to the streets untouched by nature. The few weeks prior to this he had witnessed the great battle against the mecha. Untill now Jeremy had not set foot there as he made due with scavenging in the area near the library. Though as it had been over run by nature and his reserve supplies began to dwindle. He needed to scout for more and learn his way around. He learned quite a bit about the inhabitants of that side of the city through the battle. The tales by Jack were indeed true, there were people beyond human who roamed this city. He noticed a child using a scythe. She made quick work of a Bulker and played with its body like it was a toy. She also showed either great sense of awareness or telepathic abilities. As a person who tried to sneak up on her was quickly dealt with. He also noticed the majority of people who took down the mecha. Several looking like normal humans but a few not so much. There was one who was throwing cars like rocks at the mecha and a 6 armed mutant using what looked like an anti material rifle. She showed great skill with it and as well as being quick and decisive. He was most curious as to what bullet she fired to take down the machine of death. Which was his primary objective "Search/ scavenge what was left of it". He had been monitoring it with his binoculars on top of the library as he had when the battle took place. Some had come and gone and taken parts off it. Though he believed the interior was left alone for the most part. He had planned to go a week earlier but there was another string of action and explosions that deterred him. He always exercised patience when he was unsure of things. Though now it had been all but quiet since. It was now or never if he was going to get into that mecha and scavenge what remained of the bullet and inner workings of it. He packed a good amount of everything in his arsenal. He had no clue as to what he would encounter and preparation meant the difference between living and dying. It would take him awhile as he slowly progressed through the forest. But if he didn't take his time not only would the undead notice his presence but the other things that lived within it would also. So as such he took his time, always keeping an eye and ear out for movement or sounds. (Not sure if this story is to far ahead, if so I can specify it's in the future. Then later we can possibly link them up with current events.) |

Ridiculously long As he looked around the streets and buildings with his thermal goggles he couldn't see any signs of undead. Jeremy had finally made it after a grueling 7 hours and a mile and a half of stalking. A few undead had unknowingly tripped and fell over him. As well as about halfway through it began to rain heavily. He had to detour around low level area's else risk the chance of drowning. He was soaked from head to toe in water and sweat. The ghillie suit he had used hid his thermal signature but did little to keep him cool. He took if off proceeding to leave the forest in search of a place to hide for the night. He had been outside at night before a few times and barely managed to tell the tale. It was especially dangerous as it had just stopped raining an hour ago. If it was one thing crawlers enjoyed more than darkness it was wet and damp. He made his way across the street. Using what rubble he could to hide himself in case someone had thermal goggles and was looking in his direction. Though he couldn't move as fast as he pleased. He had to watch the sound he was generating lest he be swarmed and eaten. As such he made sure to shift weight from leg to leg upon each step he took. Making it to the wall of a two story building he looked down both ends of the street to check for anything moving. Though he couldn't see anything he could hear plenty. The water dripping from the buildings and soaked rubble. The occasional scurry of feet across concrete. This he could identify as only one thing, skitters. He silently made it down the side of the wall to his right till he ran into some windows. (You know those buildings with large portions of the front being glass.) He took a quick yet controlled look past the wall inside of the complex. Inside was clear but out in the middle of the street past the building was a pair of skitters. Just his luck there would be something there to hear him trying to enter the building. He slowly and silently reached into two of his pants pockets. Sorting out a light cube and a noise maker. He then reaching to his right side holster and produced his Walther PPK suppressed. He had cleaned it before leaving the library so it was locked, loaded and ready. He was going to attempt to get past the skitters if possible. Though with the broken glass to pass through to get inside, his chances were quite slim. Noise maker: Any object that emits a constant sound for distraction. Examples: Mp3's, cassette players, radio's, stereos, Ipods etc.. With his trusted Walhter extended at full reach toward them. Jeremy creeped his right foot forward. Slowly in many increments adding weight to it as he moved forward. Each time it would make the slightest noise he would look for a reaction from the skitters. Luckily nothing yet as he finally finished moving one step in the building. Just as he was about to raise his back foot they disappeared behind some rubble. "Had they heard him already?" "Were they running toward him and he didn't notice?" These two questions he asked himself as he looked around to find them again. To his relief they had just moved across the street more into another building. He guessed they were scouting for dead bodies from the day to feast on. While constantly keeping his eyes on them still he progressed ever so slowly. When he finally had gotten past the glass he made his way further into the building. Though at this point his thermal vision was failing him. He slid the goggles up off his face to see if his eye's could make anything out. To his predictions it was pitch black and he couldn't see anything. He slid the goggles back on and checked where the Skitters had gone. He saw them go further into the building and disappear. Though it was hard to tell as they were black moving masses in a black room. He figured he might as well try now as ever though. Removing his goggles again and steadying them. He reached for his flashlight and flicked it on and off quickly into the building. All he needed was a second to see and memorize the layout. "A door in the back" was all he could get before he heard a hiss across the street. He quickly put his flashlight away while at the same time putting his goggles back on. The skitters across the streets had of course seen the light. They flinched at it then bolted toward the source. In seconds they were across the street and inside the doorway to the front. As soon as they made it inside Jeremy already had his Walther PPK out and extended his right hand in a cup next to it. Turning off the safety he shot twice at the skitter closest, it took the first round and got its torso blown off, then the second shot destroyed the bottom. As this happened Jeremy managed to catch both bullet casings exciting the chamber. He rushed and put them in his pocket and cupped his hand again. The skitter was now about 10 feet away from him. It began to emit a ticking sound as it prepared to attack. Though Jeremy was never hesitant in his actions. Without fault he gave the second skitter the same treatment as the first. Two shots, head then torso, again catching both casings and putting them in his pocket. He searched around for anymore but after a minute decided there were none. Though a new sound could be heard far off at the end of the street, out of his view to his right. He wasn't completely sure what, but just that whatever it was it was heavier than the skitters. He chose to not wait for it and made his way toward the door he had just seen a glimpse of. Eventually getting close enough he could touch it, he felt around for the knob. Once finding the cold rusted circular object he gave it a good twist and pushed in. "Locked" Course with his luck it would be locked while he was almost blind and vulnerable. He felt around above it to see what kind of security the place had. The door had a sole deadbolt lock above the knob and nothing else. To get in would be easy but not quiet. He tuned his ears to the noise down the street earlier. It sounded like it had gotten louder.... no....it had multiplied. Whatever it was had friends and was making it's way toward his location. They might have heard the skitter ticking from earlier, as it was louder than his Walther PPK. Either way he saw no other way but to break in and distract whatever was coming his way. He put his Walther PPK back in it's holster, clicking the safety on. As it would be useless against the lock. He instead grabbed a hold of his 870 tactical shotgun. Then undid the belt holding it horizontal against his lower back. Holding it in his right hand he put the elastic belt back around his waist with a *click*. Checking his left pocket he made sure the noise maker was on top and easy to reach. Scoping out where the deadbolt was again with his free hand he setup the shot. He turned his head away and pulled the trigger. Erupting from the shotgun was the buckshot he had loaded into it prior to beginning his stalk to the street. It utterly destroyed the deadbolt lock, sending shrapnel everywhere. It cut a good portion of his urban camo up around his arms and even managed to cut his face. Though he had no time to worry or care as he sprang into action. As soon as the shot was fired he brought the noise maker out of his left pocket. Turning it on, he under hand tossed it out of the building. Where it skipped across the street and landed partway into the building the skitters had been in. As it left his hand he turned his attention back to the deadbolt. He pulled the bolt that was left out of the door frame and gave the knob a twist. Of course without the functional lock he got in, quickly shutting the door and positioning his back against the wall behind it. He had his shotgun at his waist as he pumped it to load a new shell. Again catching the casing and placing it in his right pocket. Whatever was down the street had immediately heard the shotgun go off. Afterword it quickly advanced to where the sound and Jeremy was. Jeremy was peaking through the hole where the deadlock use to be. He could hear the commotion nearing the building as a group of crawlers appeared outside it. There was 5 of them total coming from both sides, they quickly entered the building looking for whatever made the noise. As they came closer and closer Jeremy prepared for the worst and waiting with his shotgun ready. Though his ears could pick up the distinct sound of bells ringing. The crawlers were about to come in contact with the door just as guitars accompanied the bells. This peaked their interest and they turned around toward the direction of the building across the street. It grew louder and louder as the song Hells Bells started to pick up on the noise maker. They then shifted their attention and stalked toward it. Jeremy took this as his signal to move and get upstairs. He put his arms against the walls to help scale the stairs 4 at a time. The stairs were surprisingly narrow as he couldn't fully extend his arms. He got upstairs relatively quickly and was faced with two doors. Not wasting any time as the end of the song would be near. He opened each door and checked the rooms inside. To the right was a room with a broken window, there was an assortment of boxes, filing cabinets and furniture strewn about. "Just what I need." Jeremy whispered to himself. He put his shotgun against the wall leading to the stairway. Went inside and picked up the boxes. Then proceeded down the stairs and placed them behind the door. Then he went back up and did the same with the the cabinets and furniture. Basically blocking the door from opening without extreme effort from undead, or coordinated effort from humans. Afterwords he went and checked out the room on the left. It was empty but relatively larger than the other room and had a smaller intact window. "Perfect, looks like my luck is changing" he thought again. It was in a sense as no one was able to see him from outside the window if he used one of the corners. So he could hide and rest up until daylight. He quickly got his shotgun, then took off his SVD and heavy pack. Putting them in the corner behind where the door opened. He rummaged through it and produced his largest noise maker. He went outside and placed it in the hallway between his room and the room he had just gotten his barricading supplies from. He shut the door to that room in case they came in through the window . Then proceeded to rig the noise maker in a trap like fashion. After he was done he closed the door to his own room and like clockwork the noise maker outside stopped. He listened to the crawlers outside as to see if they would try to come up the stairs. Jack had told him crawlers were quite the intelligent undead. Though apparently they were either distracted or not as intelligent as Jeremy had expected. He waited about 15 minutes and nothing made a sound other than rain dripping outside. After he thought it was clear to move he began taking off his cloths. He was still soak and wet with sweat and water. Starting with his boots he moved to his shirt and pants. Then removed his socks and thoroughly let his feet dry. Afterword he put on a new pair and proceeded to strip down to just his socks. It was either this or risk hypothermia and the worse. He laid his clothes out and waited for them to dry as he squatted in the corner with his gear. He went through his pants pockets removing a few things. Ear plugs, noise makers, light cubes and smoke grenades. He couldn't risk using them wet and they malfunctioning. So he laid them out to dry as well. He put the ear plugs nearby for if someone or something tripped the noise maker outside he would need them. He went through his bag again and took out some water and some food. His mouth was dry as he hadn't been able to drink any on the way here. Eagerly and with much pleasure he downed half the bottle. Though also couldn't have his stomach growling attracting unwanted attention. So he ate his prepared ration and rested awaiting his equipment to dry. He eventually fell asleep though not without his Beretta 92FS in hand, and shotgun in lap. |

Jeremy woke up to the sounds of birds. It was morning and the light was shining through the window and on the wall. He looked around and was slightly blinded as all he could see was white. Remembering the goggles he took them off. He finally saw the room he had used for refuge since last night. It was completely empty with dust covering everything. "Maybe someone was planning to use this room for something." He thought as he looked at the yellow sun baked walls. "Well doesn't matter now" He began stretching, letting out a long hushed yawn. His body was stiff from being in the crouched position for so long. He turned his wrist and gave his watch a look. It had been 8 hours since he fell asleep. He checked his clothes and urban camo. Of course being left alone for this long they were dry and ready to be used again. He got dressed and was finally comfortable again. He began to look at his sleeves and at how much the shrapnel had ripped them up. There were sections where he could see his bare arm. "Not good." Though no sewing kit so it was wasting time thinking about it. He knelt down and began checking his other equipment. Everything seemed dried and ready to go, noise makers, light cubes, and most importantly smoke grenades. He would be using them today and needed them to work properly. He put them all back into there respective pockets&pouches. He opened his pack again and then proceeded toward the door. He had his Beretta 92FS readied with the safety off. He slowly and quietly opened his door just enough to look outside. He couldn't see anything so he stood still and listened carefully. Nothing except for the birds and the occasional wind blowing outside. He proceeded to open it all the way as quietly as possible. Then knelt down and began to disarm his noise maker trap for last night. He's glad nothing came and triggered it else he would be hurting also. After about 10 minutes of careful movements he had it back to it's original form. He went back in the room and place it into his heavy pack. Putting his Beretta in it's holster with the safety on. He picked up his tactical shotgun and clipped loose the elastic belt around his waist. Threading it through the custom belt loop he had put on it, securing it to his lower back with a *click*. Then he put the SVD sideways against his back above the shotgun. Lastly throwing the heavy pack over it, he was ready to go. Right as he was preparing to leave he noticed the ear plugs on the ground still. " Definitely need these just in case..." He put them in his left pocket which was empty after organizing his items again. His left eye began to itch so he removed his glasses and began rubbing it. Not long before he felt a stinging pain on his face. He then remembered the shrapnel had not only cut up his camo but him as well. He took one of his mirrors and checked how badly the wound was. Across the left side of his face was a gash 3 inches long. There was dried blood on his face as well. He rubbed the dried and flaking blood off and checked to make sure it was relatively clean. Though he didn't have the time or the supplies to waste on such a trifle. Equipping the Beretta 92FS he made his way outside into the hallway. Ignoring the door across from him for whatever it may hold. He crept toward the stairs where he had built his barricade last night. As he had seen it last it was untouched. Getting down to the bottom he slowly prodded the door open with his foot. Checking outside for noises or movement. Though nothing seemed to be active in the early rays of daylight. So he squeezed between the barricade and the door frame. With a little noise and shimmying he made it through into the building. He remembers it vaguely from last night and his run in with the skitters. Surprisingly their corpses weren't there this morning. Apparently it wasn't just crawlers and skitters he was dealing with last night. No need to think further on it, Jeremy thought about where to go next. "Need to get a vantage point." He lightly jogged to the right side of the interior of the building. Controlled and quickly he peeked past the wall down the street. He took 10 seconds to check the place out before returning behind the wall. He had seen a few Walkers roaming around but no buildings high enough for his purpose. Afterword he glanced across the street to try and spot his noise maker from last night. With no trace of it left he jogged to the other side of building where he had first entered. He popped his head out again to check both sides of the street. Nothing to his left but a few walkers about 300 yards to his right. He decided that was enough distance to move around without being in danger. He slowly walked over the glass and returned again to the wall he had been on last night. This time he went down the left side instead of the right. When he finally reached the end of it he checked behind him for the walkers. Blissfully ignorant of him they trudged around as usual. He got down on his hands and knees and peeked around the corner. Looking for threats first then buildings. Lucky down this street there was nothing but rubble and destroyed building. Least what he could see in the street and from the interiors of the buildings. About 800 yards Jeremy had to guess was a 7-10 story office building. Bringing out his binoculars he scoped out the windows of the building, while still lying prone. Luckily the sun was rising out of view as he checked each of it's windows. It took him roughly 20 minutes to thoroughly check all of them. From what he could see from here, there was no one inside. As he was beginning to scan the street he heard a gnarl from behind him. Without having to think he turned and aimed. There was a walker 5 feet away about to jump at him. Before it got a chance Jeremy put one through it's skull with his Beretta 92FS. It kept shuffling forward but eventually just fell and face planted on the street. He perked his ears to hear for more but couldn't hear any. He stored the shell casing in his pocket and returned to scanning the street. There was enough debris for him to have cover for the majority of the way to the building. Seeing no other easier alternatives other than the sewers perhaps. He stored away his binoculars and readied to get to the first piece of cover. Just because he couldn't see anyone didn't mean someone wouldn't arrive as he was making his way toward the building. He remembered the woman with the anti material rifle. If she was somewhere in the city perched up high he would be a sitting duck with or without cover. Going over it in his head he thought of exactly where and how to hide for best cover. After feeling ready he moved a small smoke grenade and light cube into his left pocket. This homemade one was lighter than the conventional but produced less haze. Though if he needed to get inside a building it would do the job well enough. He knelt down and began a crouched run for the first piece of cover. Ready for the slightest sound of gunfire to dive forward. Nothing however did and he made it to the first pile of debris. He waited here as planned to for 5 minutes. He thought if anyone saw a glimpse of him they would lose interested after 5 minutes. The time passed and he made a dash for the second piece of cover. Again nothing shot at him so he waited another 5 minutes. He continuously did this 7-8 times till he was halfway down the street and to the office building. |
