As charming as this movie is in its vibrant life of magic in the sense of entertaining animation and intriguing world of the supernatural... it's surprisingly and completely nonsensical for how overrated it is. Very disappointing. 4/10.
I guess the prostitution theory somewhat makes sense to the peculiar out of place plot points, but regardless, on the surface, a lot doesn't make sense or is utterly stupid.
Even though I don't know yet because I haven't watched enough, I could be a big fan of Studio Ghibli.
Aside from this, years ago, out of all of his anime, I only watched Ponyo and Whisper of the Heart. Apparently Spirited Away seems to be his most popular and highest rated movie, so I'm shocked and disappointed to find out that it's actually mediocre if you think about it critically.
A spoiled little girl terrified of authority or simply following her family into a tunnel which leads to a bathhouse (for spirits) fairly quickly becomes extremely courageous after only a day or two of chaos against these spirits attempting to catch and kill her.
Throughout this, a boy who looks slightly older carefully protects her. Later in the end, we find out he's a literal river spirit (as a dragon) who saved her when she was younger- and somehow, which was never properly displayed... loved each other... that sudden fact is forced by introducing this random curse that can only be broken by love.
Sure, she desperately saved him to return the favor in a way, moreso because she cares about him and feels responsible, but that was not love from what they executed.
His unconscious way of holding her close was a bit creepy, but I disregarded it because they're children- until I find out in the end he subconsciously loved her since he saved her- for whatever reason. That's stupid.
What's worse aside from the sudden courage from a previously terrified girl, is her neglect and forgiveness- in fact, the overall neglect from everyone that wanted to kill her when they don't and let her go in the end is idiotic. From a spirit great grandfather who helps her but is left out with nothing more and doesn't act caring at first, to a random No Face Monster Spirit who eats several spirits, helping but oddly wanting to eat the little girl as well... which apparently is a whole hidden message of child prostitution I guess- from how she's forced to work, and how No Face attempts taboo. I don't know.
But No Face was a random plot. So was the baby, the twin sister and the whole- everything... none of it makes sense. Nothing is explained.
Again. Girl ends up in the spirit world. The spirits want to kill her. Dragon river spirit who saved her with amnesia subconsciouly loves her protects her. The master old witch accepts the girl's deal of survival by working at the bathhouse. She cleans the place, cleans a powerful rich dirty spirit who once cleaned spits out a medicine, all while a No Face dangerous spirit helps her,
To then finding the Dragon injured, and the twin sister witch appearing to get back what the dragon stole from her- turns her sister's crow and baby into tiny beings... Afterwards, she saves the dragon with the medicine.
Finally to then the little girl going back to the twin witch, asking for help, not receiving it because the witch claims she can't do anything (stupid- why) ... The dragon appears. They go to save her parents, and she remembers how they met.
Accepts a deal with the witch. Succeeds in noticing none of those pigs are her parents who were turned into pigs by eating the bathhouse's food in the beginning, and the curse is broken. Everybody is happy for her, she's happy with everyone herself, all while they completely forget that they wanted to kill her, and she doesn't seem to care at all anymore what they put her through... It is fucking stupid.
It's visually pleasing and entertaining, but these random plots are awful. I think it deserves a 3/10. |
