I am going to list of the Japanese fashions. If you want more info on different styles, you could leave a message in the "suggestion" post below, or look yourself.</strong> <em>Quick links:</em> Traditional | FRUiTS | Ganguro | Lolita / Gothic lolita / Kuro & Shiro lolita | Visual Kei <span style="font-size: 200%;"><span style="color:darkblue"><strong>Traditional</strong><!--color--></span><!--size--></span> The traditional fashion is mainly the <strong><em>kimono</em></strong>. It is worn by both men and woman, but mostly by woman. Their are several styles of kimono for example: woman have a summer kimono called a "<!--link--><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yukata">yukata</a>". <div style="text-align: center;"> <img src="http://generationotaku.net/images/news/0608/yukata11.jpg" border="0" /> <em>Image from: <a href="http://generationotaku.net/" target="_blank">http://generationotaku.net/</a></em> <!--center--></div> It's made with lighter meterial because in Japan it gets really hot in the summer. Kurotomesode is the formal type of kimono worn by married woman. Furisode are the most formal kimono and is worn by unmarried woman (you can see the diference by the sleeve length). Susohiki is worn by the "<!--link--><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geisha">geisha</a>". <div style="text-align: center;"> Geisha in kimono <img src="http://www.phototravels.net/kyoto/geisha-n/geisha-kyoto-n-008.3.jpg" border="0" /> <em>Image from: <a href="http://phototravels.net/" target="_blank">http://phototravels.net/</a></em> <!--center--></div> Just for quick info on geisha, they are traditional female entertainers in classical music and dance (as shown in picture above). <span style="font-size: 200%;"><span style="color:darkblue"><strong>FRUiTS</strong><!--color--></span><!--size--></span> FRUiTS: Tokyo street fashion. <div style="text-align: center;"> <img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1023/745610863_2dba657679.jpg" border="0" /> <em>Image found on: <a href="http://flickr.com/" target="_blank">http://flickr.com/</a></em> <img src="http://harajukustyle.net/pics/harajuku_girls.jpg" border="0" /> <em>Image from: <a href="http://harajukustyle.net/" target="_blank">http://harajukustyle.net/</a></em> <!--center--></div> <span style="font-size: 200%;"><span style="color:darkblue"><strong>Ganguro</strong><!--color--></span><!--size--></span> <div style="text-align: center;"> <img src="http://img4.imageshack.us/img4/1724/ganguru015.jpg" border="0" /> <em>Image found on: <a href="http://imageshack.us/" target="_blank">http://imageshack.us/</a></em> <!--center--></div> <span style="font-size: 200%;"><span style="color:darkblue"><strong>Lolita</strong><!--color--></span><!--size--></span> Before I begin, for those who are wondering if the lolita fashion have anything to do with the <u>Lolita</u> novel, it does not. The lolita fashion is something that you see people in Japan wear. The outfits are frilly. You can discribe them as being short ball-gown dresses with ruffles. Most of the lolita wearers have their platform shoes, knee-high socks, head dress and and others, but most consist of these accessories, but there is a wide variety. The lolita fashion was better recognised when bands, the Visual Kei, started becoming popular. There are casual lolita dresses, classic lolita dresses, elegant lolita dresses, etc. It really is funny how they can wear them in puplic... But it is a fashion there. <div style="text-align: center;"> <img src="http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/08jL2SYgVmbZV/610x.jpg" border="0" /> <em>Image from: <a href="http://daylife.com/" target="_blank">http://daylife.com/</a></em> <!--center--></div> If there's anyone interested in brands for <em>lolita</em>, I have a list. NOTE: These brands may, or may not have a website, so don't feel bad that you can't find them. <ul> <li><!--link--><a href="http://www.babyssb.co.jp/shopping/english.html">Baby, The Stars Shine Bright</a> <li>Innocent World <li>Angelic Pretty <li>Maruione <li>Shotgun Wedding <li>Fairy Wish <li>Atelier~pierrot <li>EXCENTRIQUE <li>h.NAOTO FRILL </ul></ol> <span style="font-size: 100%;"><span style="color:darkblue"><em>Sub-style</em>: <strong>Gothic Lolita</strong><!--color--></span><!--size--></span> Gothic Lolita is a uniquely Japanese style of dress. Gothic lolita is basically the same thing as lolita, eccept that it's more dark meaning mostly black with darker colors, crosses and such. <div style="text-align: center;"> <img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3524/3223990495_c192af286b_o.jpg" border="0" /> <em>Image found on: <a href="http://flickr.com/" target="_blank">http://flickr.com/</a></em> <!--center--></div> Gothic lolita platform boots <div style="text-align: center;"> <img src="http://images1.fanpop.com/images/photos/1700000/Gothic-Lolita-Boots-lolita-fashion-1775480-220-293.jpg" border="0" /> <em>Image found on: <a href="http://fanpop.com/" target="_blank">http://fanpop.com/</a></em> <!--center--></div> <span style="font-size: 100%;"><span style="color:darkblue"><em>Sub-style</em>: <strong>Kuro and Shiro lolita</strong><!--color--></span><!--size--></span> "Kuro" (black) lolita & "shiro" (white) lolita, are simply lolitas who either dress completely in black, or white. I think japanese fashion is one of the most colorfull fashion in the world. Have a look at the kimono - there is, for example, flower and many different desings on it. And the lolita style (not every lolita of ocurse) which is usualy pink, red, blue and brown. Or visual kei - I love visual kei for creativity, that yu must use while designing clothes in this style...

That is not a geisha, that's either a tayuu or somebody dressed up as a tayuu (more likely since there's only one true Tayuu active nowadays, plus three or four retired ones) and that's not a susohiki, that's an uchikake (big overcoat-like kimono worn over a full kimono and its obi).
Real geisha look way less garish. Not that tayuu attire is not beautiful, but it's just completely different.
