The good thing about keeping 7 characters instead of 8 is that you will be able to gain more experience points after each battle with just 3 members in the party, while having enlightment enabled as well as training. 1.5x exp / 3 > 1.5x exp / 4

Yeah, the first time I played Second Story, I completely missed getting Ashton. Then, at the end of the game, I still only had seven characters. I messed up so bad. XD

You have to play the game twice to see the full story from both points of view anyway, so you have another chance to recruit the characters you missed the first time. It's fun to play over with different combinations of party members to see all the possible conversations, PAs, and endings. *is currently playing 2 or 3 different saves* ;D

I only played a few hours and it seems to be pretty good. The only disappointment is that there are 8 character slots and that there are 13 characters which makes recruiting characters a cautious decision as some of the ones I like later in the game might end up as non-recruitable if I had recruited one of their rivals ahead of time. On the other hand, if I missed the chance of recruiting one character, it may lead to not being able to recruit a future character. More over, it isn't easy to fight with just 2 party members at the beginning of the game. I have already lost more than 5 battles trying to do the speedy level-up battles at the mountain areas.
