The Alternelitist JP Stories Fan Club

Information
Anime is quite a niche medium, as well as one that is on financial life support. Thus, there are 2 types of shows that tend to get made: -1: Shows for otakus -2: Mass appeal shows As well as 1 type of show that manages to trump both by just being really good: -3: The classic. You know, the ones that were highly influential and everyone knows including non anime fans like Ghibli movies, Akira and Evangelion. Plenty of the shows for Otakus will feature pandering which results into a lot of escapist fantasy wish fullfilment full of fanservice and self insert characters. But it may not just be shallow, it may also get really trashy with sexual fanservice, incest, lolis, creepy jokes, etc. You'll get an asterisk wars. This has turned a lot of anime outsiders off who were initially very interested because of type 2, the mass appeal show. Those shows have little trashy about them and are genuinely trying to tell a story, but they're not specialized in anything, such as Attack on Titan. Sometimes when an otaku pander show has a really catchy concept or great presentation, it may become mass appeal anyways, such as sword art online. Having this become so popular only then further helps outsiders be turned off of anime. They may see the weird damn near tentacle rape scene in sao and think "Okay, maybe this is not for me..". But there is one way to save this would be anime fan! The taste of the anime elitists! The alternative anime loving elitists are a bunch of pretentious fucks like ThatAnimeSnob (Yes I know it's a persona) who think they're better than everyone for only liking anime that has more solid writing and nothing embarrasing in it that'd be a guilty pleasure. This may sound bad, but the thing is that the anime elitist, while a condescending prick, does actually have some really good shows to share, all because they have standards. From really well executed normal shows, to thought provoking weird artsy shit, the anime elitist will introduce you to something you won't be embarrased to share. This club will be for those people who don't really find themselves to mostly fit in with the otaku type in terms of taste, as well as people who just aren't satisfied with what mass appeal japanese stories have to offer and are looking for something a bit different. Now, this isn't just for anime, but for all Japanese stories, whether it be manga, story focused games, novels or visual novels. In fact, I'd encourage more of the other mediums, because there's more resources out there to find new elitist approved anime. Making an anime show is a lot more financially risky. It's much easier to make a manga, and thus I bet there'd be more niche manga to discover. But try to use a manga database and you will basically have to filter off most of the genres (ecchi, harem, yuri, etc). So to combat this I'm keeping a curation spreadsheet list, which users who join the club may get access to. This list will contain serveral types of elitist approved anime. These are: -Mainstream Elitist. The mainstream elitist is somebody who likes mainstream shows, but only the best ones that aren't all that trashy. A lot of anime community outsiders will fall under this category. Usually these are the classic shows that were so good that they transcended audience, so they may be pretty normal but they may crossover into alternative as well. Examples would be Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Ghibli Movies, Satoshi Kon movies and Neon Genesis Evangelion. -Alternative Elitist. The alternative elitist isn't into stuff that's all that normal. This person likes unique art styles, psychological and or philosophical tangents, vague plots and weird artsy bullshit. You know, that guy who always wants something thought provoking or profound or different. That doesn't mean it has to be serious, but it must have either some kind of depth and or uniqueness to it. It must stand out from your average anime in some way or another. Examples include Evangelion, Perfect Blue, Serial Expiriments Lain, Texhnolyze, Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Cat Soup, Angel's Egg, Gankutsuo, Kaiba, the Tatami Galaxy, Ergo Proxy, Homunculus, etc. -The Faux-Elitist or Semi-Elitist. These are the people who kind of fit in with the elitists but not really. They will not just love the elitist shows, but also the shows that bridge the gap between the 'mainstream+Otaku taste, towards the elitist taste. These are the shows some elitists will tell you to avoid, but you will probably be able to enjoy with the right mindset. Stein's Gate, Death Note, Madoka Magicka, Psycho pass and other urobuchi works, Baccano, Haruhi Suzumiya, and Makoto Shinkai films like your name. -The fun elitist. Anime are cartoons! They're animated, they're supposed to be fun and over the top. Right? So just turn your brains off and have fun with the over the top madness! But some people are even elitist about which shows not to be taken seriously are good or not. That's where the fun elitist will fit in. These shows aren't exactly profound, but they're just very well executed fun or even just relaxing stuff like Aria the Animation. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Redline (mostly for the animation), Nichijou, Boku No Hero Acedemia, Mob Psycho 100, etc. --Animation Elitist. These are liked by Elitists purely because they're visually impressive. This is quite hypocritical considering elitists always make fun of people for liking stuff just because it has pretty colors, but these stories really are a visual spectacle. Examples include Redline and Paprika. !!NOTES!!: -All of this stuff doesn't have anything to do with quality per se. More with the type of show it is and what type of audience it attracts. Just because you don't like Stein's Gate doesn't mean it doesn't belong on the list, capiche? -All of this stuff has nothing to do with popularity. An alternative show or book or whatever can still become really popular under the right circumstances. Just look at Alternatve Rock with Nirvana. But it still sounded nothing like traditional blues rock/hard rock acts, making it alternative. -Some entries their demographic is technically incorrect. Japanese anime demographics come from manga, and if it's an anime original, well, technically there is no gender/age demographic. But I just arbitrarily pick whatever I feel it'd appeal to more or I thought they were going for. Rule!: Don't take this shit too seriously. I hope you could tell this was a bit tongue in cheek. But I'd just like to make a curation list for those kinda shows. --- The spreadsheet is not finished in the slightest. This is basically just a template for how it should look. Again, I'd love for people to add non anime stuff too. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1xsN4DIUFqp6LfFKy1GlFZt2PtejtA6RiT_V1AGF3hJ0/edit?usp=sharing
