Chuuni & Denpa Characters

Chuunibyou (lit. “eighth grader syndrome”): A character who often pretends to be a made-up character from fantasy such as a vampire or warrior, often imagining themselves to possess magical powers or cursed items. Characters with chūnibyō tend to have a unique manner of speech, dress in gothic clothing, or wear objects such as bandages or eyepatches to "seal away curses inside their body". The term refers to how children tend to exhibit this behaviour during their second year of middle school, but is often used to describe characters who exhibit these traits regardless of their actual age. Examples: Takanashi Rika from Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai!, Kanzaki Ranko from The iDOLM@STER Cinderella Girls. Denpa (電波), also denpa-kei (電波系) or denpa-san (電波さん): While the term “Denpa” literally means electromagnetic waves, it is also a Japanese urban slang used to describe individuals who are disconnected or disassociated from the people around them. They may entertain wild fantasies and persecutory delusions or other strong beliefs, and their speech or actions may seem strange or incoherent to outside observers. Examples: Ochibana Ame from Denpa-teki na Kanojo, Touwa Erio from Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko.
