Information
A Song of Ice and Fire is an ongoing a series of epic fantasy novels by American novelist and screenwriter George R. R. Martin. Martin began writing the series in 1991 and the first volume was published in 1996. Originally planned as a trilogy, the series now consists of five published volumes; a further two are planned. In addition there are three prequel novellas currently available, with several more being planned, and a series of novella-length excerpts from the main Ice and Fire novels.
The story of A Song of Ice and Fire takes place in a fictional world, primarily on a continent called Westeros but also on a large landmass to the east, known as Essos. Most of the characters are human but as the series progresses others are introduced, such as the cold and menacing supernatural Others from the far North and fire-breathing dragons from the East, both thought to be extinct by the humans of the story. There are three principal story lines in the series: the chronicling of a dynastic civil war for control of Westeros among several competing families; the rising threat of the Others, who dwell beyond an immense wall of ice that forms Westeros' northern border; and the ambition of Daenerys Targaryen, the exiled daughter of a king who was murdered in another civil war fifteen years before, to return to Westeros and claim her rightful throne. As the series progresses, the three story lines become increasingly interwoven and dependent upon each other.
The North The North or the north is one of the constituent regions of Westeros and was a sovereign kingdom before the War of Conquest. The region covers the entire area south of the Wall and north of the Neck. The North has been ruled by House Stark for thousands of years from the castle known as Winterfell. Other notable houses of the region include Bolton, Karstark, Manderly, and Umber. Bastards of noble origin raised in the North are given the surname Snow. The Vale of Arryn or the Vale is one of the constituent regions of Westeros and was formerly a sovereign nation known as the Kingdom of Mountain and Vale before the War of Conquest. The Vale is ruled by House Arryn from the castle known as the Eyrie. The Mountains of the Moon surround the smaller Vale proper, although the valley's name is often applied to all of the Arryns' realm. Notable houses of this region include Corbray, Hunter, Redfort, and Royce. Bastards of noble origin raised in the Vale are given the surname Stone. The Westerlands or westerlands is a region in the west of the continent of Westeros. It is ruled from Casterly Rock by House Lannister. Before the Targaryen conquest, it was known as the Kingdom of the Rock. People from the Westerlands are known as westermen. The customary surname of noble bastards born in the Westerlands is Hill. The Westerlands lies along the coast of the Sunset Sea, with Ironman's Bay and the Iron Islands to the north. Settlements on the western coast include Banefort, the Crag, Faircastle on Fair Isle, Kayce, Feastfires, Casterly Rock with Lannisport, and Crakehall. Hills and mountain ranges are spread throughout the Westerlands, with inland castles near the Rock including Ashemark and Sarsfield. The Reach is one of the constituent regions of the Seven Kingdoms on the continent of Westeros. It was formerly a sovereign nation known as the Kingdom of the Reach before the War of Conquest. The Reach is ruled from the castle of Highgarden by House Tyrell. It is the second-largest of the kingdoms behind the North and is considered the most fertile and heavily-populated part of Westeros. Bastards born in the Reach are given the surname Flowers. The Reach is considered the home of chivalry in Westeros. It is the place where knighthood is looked upon with the greatest reverence and esteemed the most. It is also the place where the rules to tournaments are the most stringent and managed. The Iron Islands is one of the constituent regions of the Seven Kingdoms, and it was formerly a sovereign nation under the same name, until the War of Conquest. The Iron Islands are home to a fierce people who call themselves the ironborn and are ruled by House Greyjoy from the castle of Pyke. The Iron Islands is an archipelago in Ironman's Bay, located in the Sunset Sea off the western coast of Westeros. They are roughly west of the Riverlands, northwest of the Westerlands, and south of the North. The seven major islands are Pyke, Great Wyk, Old Wyk, Harlaw, Saltcliffe, Blacktyde, and Orkmont. The Lonely Light, located eight days sail northwest of Great Wyk, is the most distant of the islands. The Iron Islands is the smallest of the regions of the Seven Kingdoms, but Dorne is the least populous. The Stormlands or stormlands is one of the constituent regions of the Seven Kingdoms on the continent of Westeros. It was formerly a sovereign nation by the same name until the War of Conquest, in which the last Storm King was slain. The Stormlands are ruled from the castle of Storm's End by House Baratheon. They are so-named for the savage and frequent storms that batter the coast. Noble bastards raised in the Stormlands are given the surname Storm. Dorne is the large peninsula which makes up the southern-most part of Westeros, and is one of the constituent regions of the Seven Kingdoms. Its capital is Sunspear and the lords of the ruling House Martell still style themselves "Prince" and "Princess" in the Rhoynish fashion. Club Members Club Pictures No pictures have been uploaded
