it appears in greetings. Some manga translators say that we don't have an exact expression for it in english, so they have to go around the japanese meaning and look for the most simmilar word.

mm.. many things depending on the context. It's a mixture of "nice to meet you" "take care of me from now on" "I'll be counting on you"......something like that and many other things.
