@JustLain fascinating stuff you're talking about (and, at least to met, even quite obscure on top of that).

I was using the German website AniSearch to manage my watched anime. I think AS had an integrated and active forum when I joined back in 2012 that was shut down by the owner shortly afterwards due to missing resources. A large group decided to switch to a pure forum site called AniPodium, all German speaking as well. I spent a big part of my off time there and I think there was a proper community feeling to it during at least a couple of years. Some Bundesländer even had their own section where people would meet IRL for conventions and forum gatherings. Different times, definitely.
Everything disintegrated around the mid 2010's. Forums had anyway run their course by that time and AS decided to reopen their forum while opening 5-6 sister sites for different languages. I'm not sure whether they've been successful with this, but by then I've moved on to other things as well, that's how life goes. Honestly, while having quite fond memories of that time, I'm happy to leave it past me and curious about how everything (Anime, our relationship with it and our means of communication) develops from here onwards.

Hello @Ash-B, I'm happy to have you here!

It's interesting to look at what happens away from the main road. The best content is sometimes produced behind closed doors. I wonder how much we are truly missing. Maybe not much, maybe much more than we think. And it is nice to find recurring faces, to have a little group.

What database did you use before MAL?

Before I joined MAL, I was in a small forum, about repairs and hacks, where we'd list all anime we found and liked. We had one thread where every answer was basically a copy of the previous answer, with added anime. It was weirdly functional. We were like 10-20 people? More? We had so many weird videos to share. Random stuff that I can't find nor name. I think it was mainly one guy who had access to all of it as he lived directly in Japan. We were using SVN tortoise to share those files; it was awesome. I no longer find worthwhile OVA or ONA these days. Sometimes, we had RAW anime without translation. As a kid I'd watch that without understanding half of it. It was like a fever dream.

Cheers to you @JustLain. I'm not sure whether I really understood your message; nonetheless it still encouraged me to leave a comment as well.

I for my part joined MAL comparably recently, switching from another database where I felt that the community (and thus the site itself) was slowly turning into a state of decline. So I can't really speak for everyone here.

At the end of the day I feel like this format (at least the Club section) is dying out. There may be active sections here at MAL but the this club never hit a critical size to begin with and younger audiences seem to communicate through other means. Anime has become more popular throughout the years and the times where we needed to turn to online forums and such to even be able to talk to someone about our passion are past us I'd say.
Still I'd be down for a casual convo if anybody's interested.

This website has a weird charm once you go delving into it. Think about it... We are here, talking in English. How many people can even speak this language in Switzerland? There must be millions watching anime like Pirates without paying a dime. Most of them might not even think about looking for a web service to list the anime they watched. Many must start watching a few anime and forget to finish half of it. Some use Microsoft's Code Block and make extensive lists with intricate formats; they might even generate rating systems of their own. Others make listings within old-style forums, where they share their discoveries.

And there are only 90 of us; most are gone.

Have you ever tried inputting nonsense in the search bar and filtering for users to see how many there are? Looking at their dead profiles, they haven't visited for decades, wondering what happened to them. Is he dead? Did she really stop watching anime after sticking so long? Are they even honest about their sex and birth dates? Looking at their friend lists, some came as a group of friends. Some barely watched any anime, but are still active and connecting every day, without talking on the forums. I imagine they might use MAL to communicate with their old friends, rather than use more conventional means. Just the sheer amount of people we can reach is enormous, but the amount who never speak or share in the first place, those who we would never be able to reach within normal use of most websites... Does it even mean anything to be connected?

Cheers MissBernstein for keeping up with this group up to 2021, as I can see. With club discussions started in 2017, with merely 9 replies and lasting up to 2021. I feel like floating in this weird world we live in.
