------------------------------
At the beginning of Vanguard, Aichi is a timid boy who avoids the attention of others. That all changes when Toshiki Kai appears in his life again and motivates his picking up the card game, Vanguard, using the Blaster Blade he was given by Kai years ago as the heart of his deck.
Through Vanguard, Aichi makes his treasured friends, like Misaki Tokura and Kamui Katsuragi, whilst growing as both a person and a fighter. But it's not all fun and games as there's a world of fighters out there all striving to reach the top, currently occupied by Ren Suzumagori, who has his eyes set firmly on Aichi.

Aichi starts he series as a timid student with issues about social situation. While he doesn't interact with his classmates, he is fascinated by Blaster Blade - a card he received years ago and an extremely rare card in Vanguard. This doesn't go unnoticed by Katsumi Morikawa, a classmate who then steals Aichi's treasured card for a rematch with Kai. By the time Aichi arrives at Card Capital, Kai has won Blaster Blade from Morikawa. Aichi fights Kai for his card and, in his first fight, wins it back.
Over the coming days and weeks, Aichi becomes a stronger fighter and learns the rules from his friends at Card Capital. The shop hosts a tournament in which Aichi aims to face Kai in, but that fails when he is defeated by Kamui in the semi-finals. Howeverr, as one of the Top 4, Aichi is invited to join Card Capital's team, Q4, alongside Kai, Misaki and Kamui. They head to the Regional Tournament, where Aichi struggles with the pressures of fighting in unfamiliar territory. Nevertheless, he comes through and Q4 make it to the National Tournament.

Q4 head to the National Tournament, where they struggle against the new level of fighting. Ultimately, Aichi fails to win any of his matches and his loss to Tetsu of AL4 - Ren's team - knocks the team out of the tournament. Ren taunts Aichi and strengthens his fears that his weakness is what let the team down.
When Q4 and Caeser share a Vanguard Training Camp, Aichi's visions return and he hears voices from his cards - early symptoms of Psyqualia. Through these symptoms, he discovers that his power allows him to see the conditions of his victory and becomes convinced this means he is becoming stronger and closer to his dream rematch with Kai. His personality, however, becomes distorted, and while his confidence grows, he becomes more sadistic, resembling Ren. Using Psyqualia at the Regionals, Aichi frequently collapses from the physical strain his power puts on him. Kai becomes concerned that Aichi is losing himself to his power and, after watching Aichi humilate Kyou Yahagi, leaves Q4, pushes Aichi over the edge.
Aichi meets with Ren at PSY, where he receives a Shadow Paladin deck and abandons the Royal Paladins. He joins his team-mates at the Nationals with this new deck, to their surprise, and defeats his opponents with ease, though his frequent use of Psyqualia strains his physical and mental states, leaving him bedridden after fights. Familiar with the self-destructive nature of Psyqualia, Kai lures Aichi into the Underground Sector and challenges him to a fight, using his abandoned Royal Paladin deck. During their fight, Aichi indulges in Psyqualia and acts more unlike himself, his long-buried emotions spilling over when Kai refuses to acknowledge him as stong. Using Blaster Blade and Alfred, Kai breaks through and rescues Aichi from Psyqualia, returning his deck.
Q4 return to the Nationals and Aichi faces Koutei of Team Caeser. While Psyqualia tempts him back to its control, he fiercely resists and manages to win by himself. With Q4 in the Final against AL4, Kai fights Ren; a fight witnessed by Aichi. After Kai is defeated, Suiko offers Aichi a card of light and one of darkness, asking him what path he will intend taking.
The day of the Final comes and, with Kamui's loss to Tetsu and Misaki's triumph over Asaka, the match comes down to Aichi's fight with Ren. Ren uses his Psyqualia to inflict damage on Aichi through visions on Cray where Ren's units attack Aichi's very being. Weakened and pushed to breaking point by Ren's taunts about Kai, Aichi sinks into darkness and allows Psyqualia to control him, calling Blaster Dark alongside Alfred Early and Blaster Blade. Kai desperately calls out to Aichi, helping him to fight against the force controlling him, though Ren is quick to plant seeds of doubt in questioning which Aichi is the real one.
Aichi comes to his conclusion in the form of Majesty Lord Blaster - the card he received from Suiko - accepting that Psyqualia was revealing a part of himself that he had been hiding. By uniting the two halves of himself, Aichi attains the power to defeat Ren and free him from Psyqualia, seemingly losing his own with it. The war on Cray between the Paladin clans, using Ren and Aichi as Vanguards comes to an end with the Royal Paladins' victory and they prepare for the upcoming war. Aichi returns to his usual life and Season 1 ends with his dream finally being realized and getting his rematch with Kai.

Aichi arrives at Card Capital one day to find Takuto Tatsunagi, who asks him how to play Vanguard. Aichi fights Takuto, who unveils a Gold Paladin deck and makes comments about Aichi's clans "still existing". Takuto shows Aichi a vision of Cray where Blaster Blade, Blaster Dark and Dragonic Overlord were sealed by the power they were preparing to fight, thus diminishing their army and leaving Cray vulnerable. When the vision ends, Aichi discovers his Royal Paladin deck has vanished and holds a Gold Paladin deck in its place. What's more disturbing is that no-one other than Aichi remembers that he ever played Royal Paladins.

Manga
Aichi's beginning in the manga mirrors that of the anime. Things begin to deviate when Aichi joins a Vanguard club at Hitsue Middle School, run by Mark-sensei and the early introduction of the Vanguard Fighting Gloves.

These Gloves simulate the pain fighters would feel, similar to Psychic Powers or advanced Psyqualia. Aichi watches as Morikawa and Kamui have endured fights using these, draining their strength. When Kamui loses to Kyou, Aichi takes his place and fights, experiencing symptoms of Psyqualia that bind him wih Blaster Blade and Alfred on Cray. When Kyou recognizes Aichi's symptoms, he monitors him, luring Tetsu into the fray. Tetsu challenges Aichi, whose Psyqualia becomes more powerful, but interferes with his playing, resulting in his defeat. The combination of the Fighting Gloves and Psyqualia leave Aichi weak and he's helped back to Card Capital by Kamui and Ren. Aichi's strength has yet to come back, as his eyes are heavily shaded during his meeting with Kai, who insists Aichi leave his Royal Paladin deck if he's experiencing Psyqualia, and watches Kai's fight with Ren.

Novel
Aichi appears in an upcoming Cardfight!! Vanguard novel before a new character who resembles the Aichi of the past and teaches him the rules of the game.
