I didn't experience much of a difference, but my PC is so-so and I mostly play small fortresses.

Also I just built my first magma cannon. After a minute or so of operation the non-bauxite pumps melted and the magma leaked into my fort. Fun ensued.

I found a glacier island with sand and a magma pipe. Maybe I'll try settling there to see how long I can survive.

I too have problems with carrying out big projects. You may want to try a survival, "raw" approach to the game. Settle on some nasty place and decide on a few restrictions (e.g. no traps, no underground crops, small population limit, etc.) It's pretty fun, if you know what I mean

I always want to do something awesome involving magma and pumps and shit but then end up doing exactly the same kinds of things I do on every playthrough, and it becomes boring :( gotta try something new one of those days.
Should I try going to an Evil/Savage region?

I once created an oubliette for my prisoners filled with fiendish traps everywhere, such as flood rooms, magma, wardog releasing pressure plates, and a path that goes right by my archery range. Felt good man.
