Griffith, is the charismatic leader and founder of the Band of The Hawk.
Extraordinarily charismatic, intelligent, and handsome, his skill with his sabre and tactics gives him and his band the reputation of invincibility, allowing him an opportunity to gain the favor of the Midland King during Midland's century long war with the Empire of Chuder.
Griffith is a very controversial character. He commits several heinous acts throughout the series, and whether he is an antagonist or deuteragonist afterwards is left very much to the reader's discretion, although series creator Kentaro Miura viewed him as the latter according to interviews. Following this, Griffith takes on a new persona, outwardly cold and logical, and completely untouchable to those who would harm his interests. Whether that is all he is now is left mysterious, as apart from a phantom heartbeat, Griffith's character is just as emotionally distant to the viewer as he is to those in universe.
