Maria is a very fragile and feminine vampire who becomes a new student in the night class. Upon her arrival at Cross Academy, she seems to have taken an interest in Yuuki and Zero. Maria has no problems with discussing her feelings and is quite honest and straightforward.
Maria is a very distant relative of Shizuka Hiou. When Maria was first introduced, she was possessed by Shizuka and was displayed as haughty and cruel. However, her true personality is quite the opposite. She is very caring towards her friends and wishes to be seen as useful. Maria allowed Shizuka to possess her body in exchange for being allowed to drink Shizuka's blood, which would strengthen her sickly body. Due to Shizuka's untimely death, this promise is never fulfilled. Maria is also shown to have feelings for Ichiru.
Once Maria regained consciousness of his body, she returned to be with her family. When sending out an owl in search of Ichiru, she witnesses Kaname's destruction of the Vampire Council and proceeds to spread the news. Maria returns to Cross Academy after Yuuki reassembles the night class.
