Mari is Omori's older sister. She is very gentle and sisterly, both towards her brother and towards her friends. She always appears on a checkered picnic blanket with a basket and food for her friends. When interacted with, she will compliment whoever is set as the leader in the team before showing the player a list of quests that can be completed throughout Headspace.; these quests include helpful suggestions for where to look for Basil and rumors she hears about.
In the real world, Mari was Sunny's older sister; she had died four years before the story. Beloved by everyone she knew, her original friend group grew up without her fragmented and scarred—Aubrey shed her happiness for an aggressive front and new friends, Hero fell into a deep depression, Kel was able to cope but had difficulty trying to bring the group back together, Basil isolated himself and developed anxiety, and Sunny shut himself inside his house for four years. She is buried in the back of Faraway Town's local church, though her spirit pops up occasionally in several parts of the story; she guides Sunny to calm down, focus, and persist during his hallucinatory panic attacks.
Mari was very close with her friends and had a black cat named Mewo (Nyaako in the Japanese localization). She used to play softball, but after getting a permanent knee injury, she shortly picked up piano playing. She would practice so frequently that Sunny picked up a violin in attempt to spend time with his sister. She cares very deeply for her younger brother; she and Sunny practiced a waltz duet, and once saved him from drowning. She also seems to have had feelings for Hero, casually pranking and flirting with him. She helped the group get Sunny a violin, bought Basil his Polaroid camera and photo album, encouraged Hero to cook, and promised Aubrey that she would dye her own hair purple to match Aubrey's pink hair.
Mari was last seen hanging on a tree in Sunny's backyard; this led to everyone believing she died by suicide.
However, this scene is later revealed to have been forged; in reality, Mari died after Sunny accidentally pushed her down the stairs following an argument about his violin playing the day before their planned recital. Basil helped Sunny stage a suicide with a jump rope in order to protect him, but the two were left traumatized; Basil's Something resembles her hair-tangled body after crushing down the stairs and Sunny's violin, while Sunny's Something resembles her body after seeing her bare eye revealed through her hair while her body was hanging.
Despite this accidental death, Mari is deeply forgiving towards Sunny; she shows up in his panic attacks and dreams in order to support him, asking him to forgive himself.
