Background
Always seeking to better himself with cyberware, Maine made a deal with Gloria Martinez, an Emergency Medical Technician who dealt in black market implants. Before Maine's deal could be completed, Gloria was the victim of gang violence. Maine later got word from Lucy that his Sandevistan had been spotted on another person. Lucy set a trap for David Martinez on Maine's behalf.
Timeline
At the start of the series, Maine brings two members of his crew with him to confront the person who stole his Sandevistan cyberware. After assaulting under the belief that David had stolen the Sandevistan on purpose, he contemplates ending David's life.
After David clears up the misunderstanding and Maine offers his condolences, David offers to work to pay off his debt. Initially, Maine rejects the offer, but when David shows how well he uses the Sandevistan and asks him to test him on a heist, Maine agrees to the deal.
After David's first heist with the crew, Maine invites David to an after-party where he tells David that he is impressed with his abilities, and despite the apparent debt, offers David medication and a cut of the payment from the job.
Maine then recommenda David pursue additional cyberware upgrades. A bond is formed, putting David on Maine's crew, and a life path as an Edgerunner.
David pesters Maine for additional work and training, with Maine calling upon other members of the crew to keep him busy. Maine provides David with his first gun. At the same meeting place, Maine also encourages David to pursue a romantic relationship with Lucy.
After Tanaka's abduction, Maine begins to experience medical issues due to his over-reliance on cyberware. Dorio implores Maine to downgrade to improve his condition, but the cyberware-addicted Maine is in denial and refuses to consider it. Maine's personality degrades, and he experiences his first mini episode of cyberspychosis.
Maine and Dorio stand back-to-back and confront a combination of the NCPD and Trauma Team. However, as the fighting continues, Maine brakes down into full cyberpsychosis, losing full touch with reality.
Dorio briefly brings Maine back to the lucidity with a dose of immunosuppressants. Maine's brief period of lucidity allows him to understand he is at fault, but having lost his partner and realizing his error, he willingly succumbs to cyberpsychosis and proceeds to kill more members of the NCPD and Trauma Team.
Maine constructs a pyre of sorts for Dorio out of explosive canisters and is finally killed along with several Maxtac officers after he detonates the canisters.
Legacy
As the person who welcomed David into a crew, supplied him with medications and income, and most importantly, acted as a mentor that made David look at Maine as a father figure; he is the inspiration behind how David lives out the rest of his life, trying to embody both Maine's cyberware physique as well as all his values.
