Lucyna Kushinada, more commonly known as just Lucy, is a netrunner and the deuteragonist of the series. She is a mysterious netrunner from Night City. Lucy is quite introverted and doesn't like to talk much about her past. Although she looks innocent, she won't hesitate to kill a person in a heartbeat if they tick her off. Lucy also considers Night City a prison and dreams of one day leaving it for the Moon.
Background
Lucy is of Japanese and Polish descent. She was selected at a young age after having taken a proficiency test, alongside 12 other children, to receive training at an undisclosed Arasaka facility and become a netrunner.
When their training concluded, the Lucy and the children were moved underground to participate in deep dives to look for knowledge that was lost during a previous massive attack. As Lucy and her friends drove into the Net, they were susceptible to old-world Demons and rogue AIs. The children were picked off one by one, and it didn't take long until only a handful of them were left.
After realizing that they could pursue other dreams, instead of being enslaved by the corporation, Lucy and the remaining children used their netrunning skills to overwhelm the Arasaka staff and escape. While making their escape, most of the children were shot down one by one, and only Lucy managed to survive.
After escaping, Lucy woke up in a junkyard. Roaming from place to place, eventually, she ended up in Night City, no longer feeling like she was being chased by the megacorp.
Timeline
In 2076, while stealing shards from corpos on their way to Corpo Plaza, she attempted to steal shards held by a teenager named David Martinez. Lucy proceeded to interrogate David, as he was messing with her "job." After a short discussion, the two agreed to work together, resulting in Lucy taking on David as her trainee and them splitting their earnings.
After overusing his Sandevistan, David Martinez passed out, causing Lucy to pay for his immunosuppressants. However, Lucy also secretly informed Maine about Sandevistan, which he originally wanted from Gloria.
Lucy then invited David home to her apartment and even included him in a romantic moonwalk Braindance, even though her goal was to kill time so Maine and his crew could arrive and confront him.
During a post-celebration gathering, David uses the Sandevistan to save Lucy by shooting the crazy man. The crew decides to bring Lucy to the Ripperdoc and let Kiwi explain the attack to the police.
After dropping Lucy off at her apartment, David wants to talk about something important, as well as Lucy. Lucy is worried about what will become of David if he goes on as an Edgerunner. However, David tells Lucy that he will be fine, and then both finally kiss each other on top of Lucy's apartment. David promises to bring her to the moon when their adventures are all over.
After the heist with Tanaka, Maine's Crew defuncts, and Lucy decides to stop her netrunner career. She cuts her ties with everyone and goes rogue. However, she still lives with David in their penthouse.
Per David's request, Lucy opens up about her past and how she was being trained by Arasaka to retrieve lost data from the Old Net. During the same conversation, Lucy tells David she is worried about his health since his new upgrades.
Even though Lucy tells David that she's not active anymore, in reality, she is trying to get rid of David Martinez's files at the Arasaka database that she encountered during their heist with Tanaka. Lucy is hunting potential suspects such as an Arasaka agent during her incognito status so corporates won't chase David Martinez and use him for their products.
As Lucy is hunting down other netrunners, she detects another Arasaka agent looking for Tanaka's data and heads over to kill him, only to fall into a trap set by Faraday and Kiwi.
After being interrogated, Lucy gets caught actively hiding Tanaka's data that had David's information. Realizing this, Faraday plans to offer Lucy and David up to Arasaka to secure his position in the company, as he impersonates Lucy to trick him into installing the cyberskeleton. Lucy escapes briefly and warns David about Faraday's duplicity before being recaptured.
Lucy is eventually saved by David. Even though the two reunited, Lucy sees David losing consciousness and unable to comprehend his surroundings. She desperately kisses him to make him come to his senses, and it works. However, David knows that it is too late for him to go back to his normal self, so he makes Lucy escape thanks to the remaining crew members.
At the end of the series, Lucy goes to the moon as if that were her final dream. However, she feels despondent that David is not there with her. While she's roaming around the Moon's surface, she has a vision of David smiling and running, which gives her a piece of sanguinity.
