Kai is a very passionate film college student, his friends call him Utsumi. He meets the protagonist, Umiko-san, while at the cinema watching "Die Max." Umiko's interest in the audience makes him intrigued, so after they become acquaintances, he heavily influences her to also enter college. From then on they become close friends.
Kai's passion for movies is shown to be initially motivated by his friend, Yuusuke, while both were in school, making short films for fun and becoming more serious with time. But although Kai believed Yuusuke would join him in pursuing their passion, they ended in separated paths given Yuusuke's family issues.
His relationship with Umiko is of mutual inspiration and interest, both stating to want to film each other and show it on big screens. They often pass important dates together and make company for each other, seeming to share an understanding for growth in the film industry.
Kai has a difficult relationship with his parents due to disagreements with his college choice. More so with his father who cheated on his mother, and since then Kai don't keep contact or accept money from him, having multiple jobs to try to cover what he can.
After Yamaguchi, a friend from college confesses to him, he opens up about not understanding romance, the way it's treated in the manga seems to make him heavily hinted as Aromantic or Asexual.
