Nadeshiko Yamato (大和 撫子)

Age: 24
Birthday: February 11th (Aquarius)

A Japanese teacher at Ohananomitsu High School, self-proclaimed American, and Aijou Rentarou's 13th girlfriend, often referred to by the nickname "Naddy".

Nadeshiko is a freeaboo or Americophile who has a very freedom loving personality and greatly admires American culture due to her fascination with the USA. This was due to her finding and watching a VHS tape of a group of American children acting contrary to her family's strict traditional Japanese customs.

Nadeshiko would also hide the fact that she was really Japanese from people after getting kicked out and disowned by her parents. Thanks to Rentarou, she learned to confront the fact that she did not feel ashamed of not living up to Japanese values. She loves American food, however, she does not know how to drink soda.

Despite pretending to be an American, Nadeshiko does not seem to be able to shake off her traditional Japanese upbringing. She is shown to be very well versed in nearly anything Japanese, including traditional style of dance, Enka singing, and even some sword skill. Based on her introduction chapter, Nadeshiko also seems to have some ability to play the koto.

She does not seem able to speak English fluently, despite her love of America. It is also known that she started learning English from a book, and that she always had many mistakes.

Name/Birthday Pun Explanation:

Yamato (大和) is an ancient name for Japan.

Nadeshiko (なでしこ or 撫子) is a type of pink carnation, translating to "Japanese Dianthus".

The name Yamato Nadeshiko also comes directly from the term "yamato nadeshiko" (やまとなでしこ), which refers to the "personification of the idealized Japanese woman". A yamato nadeshiko is typically demure and polite, with long dark hair often styled neatly, dressed in traditional Japanese clothing.

Nadeshiko's birthday is on February 11th which is Japan's National Foundation Day. But more importantly, it is also "Religious Freedom Day (信教の自由を守る日 Shinkyō no jiyū wo mamoru hi)".
