He's the primary antagonist of the "Revenge of the Love Failure" arc (愛の失敗作の復讐篇; Ai no shippai-saku no fukushū-hen) in Beastars. He is first introduced as a faux elephant therapist, killing them and using their tusks for ivory to make quick money.
Melon is a half-breed, gaining characteristics from both parents. He is a gazelle but with the jaw, claws, and eyes of a leopard.
Due to melon being a true hybrid and not a quarter, he can't taste the flavor of meat nor vegetables.
With the time he starts to develop the leopard's spots and traits.
Melon grew up believing that his leopard mother ate his gazelle father, he thought this due to his fathers absence during his childhood.
His mother was reminded of Melon's Father when seeing Melon, Melon was more gazelle than leopard in his youth, Melon believed that she was not valuing him as her child and instead perceiving him as the "replacement" of his father.
This evolved into a couple of traumas, one of them believing that her mother wanted to eat him too, seeing her spots as an army of insects instead of fur and similar.
Near the end of the arc it's revealed that Melon's father choose to abandon his family. He wasn't able to keep loving a leopard due to the fear of being eaten alive, leaving Melon and Melon's mother early in his childhood.
He makes an appearance outside the Black market, looking for Melon. But he doesn't get reunited with him. Melon doesn't get to know the truth.
