Shuuichi Saihara is a student in Ultimate Academy for Gifted Juveniles and a participant in the Killing School Semester featured in Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony.
Shuuichi has the title of the Ultimate Detective (Super High School Level Detective). Though he himself claims he doesn't deserve it, as he is only a "detective-in-training."
He runs a detective agency with his uncle, where he mostly deals with minor cases. In a conversation with Kaede, Shuichi claimed that the hardest case he ever had was for a missing pet assignment, which was an alligator. He stated it was much harder, than any infidelity case he ever worked on. By Case 1, Shuichi tells Kaede how he once caught a murderer who was seeking revenge for his family, and how he regrets it.
Case I
In Case 1 of V3, with the help of Kaede Akamatsu, he hatches a plot to catch the mastermind. He discovers a secret entrance in the library, and remarks how it is familiar to Monokuma's color scheme; this being an implication that it is where the mastermind is hiding. They set up several cameras in the library, rigged to go off if the mastermind interacts with the door. He also asked for the help of Miu Iruma, the Ultimate Inventor, to create a receiver for these cameras to notify him when the sensors go off.
In reality, Kaede used this opportunity to try to end the killing game by killing the mastermind. She did this by re-arranging the books on top of the shelves in a way that the shot put ball would roll directly on the spot near the door; this would, in theory, kill the mastermind. When Shuichi saw the receiver go off, he headed to the library. It was then that Kaede rolled the shotput ball into the library vent, killing Rantaro Amami.
Once this information becomes public during the trial, the game permanently switches protagonists from Kaede to Shuichi. He is the TRUE protagonist of V3. Kaede requests him to stop running from the truth and to expose her crime. By the end of the trial, Shuichi is having an emotional breakdown.
The case ends with him visiting the Ultimate Pianist lab, that Kaede would have been able to enter if she survived. He reminisces about the time they spent together, and swears an oath to uphold the truth before leaving the room.
Case II
In the aftermath of the first Case, Shuichi is left bedridden from depression. He hasn't left his dorm for several days. With the help of Kaito Momota, the Ultimate Astronaut, he is able to escape this depression. He removes his signature hat, revealing his ahoge and pushes on. He, along with several other students, are tricked by Kokichi's ploy that is the Bug Meet and Greet.
After Ryoma Hoshi's murder, he becomes Kaito's sidekick (despite the fact that Shuichi himself is much more proficient in solving crimes). They investigate the whole crime scene together.
During the trial, he trusts in Kaito's belief that Maki Harukawa is not the culprit, despite all the evidence against her. He creates a lie to account for her alibi.
Case III
By Case 3, Shuichi, Kaito, and Maki have formed a group, where they exercise outside the dorms at night (Unofficially referred to as "The Training Trio"). With the threat of Angie's student council, their hobbies at night are threatened.
Case IV
During the Virtual World trip, all surviving students are confined to one section of the area. Shuichi is left to watch the dining hall. When Miu falls off the roof, he joins with Tsumugi Shirogane, the Ultimate Cosplayer, who corroborates his alibi.
Case V
In Case V, the victim is unknown. In reality, Kokichi Ouma, the Ultimate Supreme Leader, blackmailed Kaito to help him kill himself. Shuichi was the only survivor who even questioned whether or not Kaito actually died, due to the unclear body discovery.
Case VI
In Case VI, Shuichi finally breaks into the mastermind's room in the library. It's there that he discovers details from the first Case, where Kaede murdered Rantaro. Using some cross elimination with dead student's alibis during the first murder, he is able to deduce that Tsumugi is the mastermind.
Tsumugi informs Shuichi, Maki, Kiibo, and Himiko that they've been inside a reality tv-show inspired by the popular video game series "Danganronpa." Students from the outside world would volunteer to participate in the killing games for fame. Tsumugi shows Shuichi his, Kaito's, and Kaede's audition tape to cement her message (It's important to note that this is not set in stone, whether or not this was actually the students and not just Tsumugi cosplaying). Shuichi, horrified by this realization, presents a speech to Tsumugi and the outside world watching the game about how they've (the participants) have been killing each other for the sake of entertainment, and about how he grieves over the loss of his classmates. He rejects both Hope and Despair, refusing to vote; this effectively breaks the killing game.
