Interest StacksIf you've ever seen an anime and thought, "Wow, this anime has really good background art", and "Wow, this episode preview at the end looks amazing!" chances are it was made by Shichiro Kobayashi. An icon of Japanese animation, Kobayashi has had a fruitful career spanning over thirty years as the art director for several iconic shows. While known generally for his vibrant and highly detailed palettes, Kobayashi brought the animation technique known as "postcard memories" or "harmonies" to life alongside director and innovator Osamu Dezaki and character designer Akio Sugino, which are cels of animation superimposed with gouache to give off a lasting image. These anime are mostly set at restaurants, cafes or bars. The characters are either working there, are frequent customers, or have yet another connection with these places. Featuring little to no dialogue and/or characters and the experience is carried by the music and/or visual atmosphere. More anime to breathe a little fresh air. The OVA market dried up as straight to video releases became a thing of the past, which is unfortunate because a lot of interesting and unique anime were released in this format. The point of the list is to feature worthwhile OVAs that are more than just fanservice or shoddy extras for TV series. Sigh, due to the explicit content warning feature, I've excluded Mezzo Forte, but it would be on here otherwise. I should also probably make room for Yukikaze at some point. Positive ecological futures. Grumpy Jii-san was an anime reviewer and hiking enthusiast. Many of us were fond of him. This is the fourth part of a list of the anime he reviewed in video order from oldest to newest. They are presented without his score as mild encouragement for you to watch his reviews. Nostalgia with softness. A sanctuary of feminine aesthetics and nature that speaks to what's lost. A longing in the heart for a time past or a place never been. |
