Both involve characters playing in an MMORPG where what goes on in the game is affecting the outside world and visa versa. Both games are run by shady companies in the real world. Characters develop deep friendships with other players in the game.

both anime take place in a video game

Set in a similar world of magic and classes, the environment of these two shows seem very similar. The hold many of the same elements, such as joining parties and guilds and growing stronger. While .hack//roots is more serious, Fairy Tale is very relaxed and quick paced to keep you interested.

Both anime's have the same theme, mc's are inside a game (Virtual MMO) and are taking the game very seriously and are stronger despite being lower level than their opponents.

Both characters (Haseo & Allen) are eerily similar, baring almost identical physical features. Haseo's (the main character for Roots) personality is more or less the depressed version of Allen, except full-time. This sort of fits as he descends into madness as the one he loves is lost to him. It's kind of like how Allen was when he thought all his friends were dead on the Ark. Both series are really great and if you like any action-e Shonen titles, Roots might be for you.

The plot is nearly the same, and after all the ANIME series are based on RPG games. U'll have a wonderfull time watching both of them.

These two series seem to go hand-in-hand for some particular reason. Both of these are not only based on a video game series, they also are dark action series who manage to be occasionally happy, but always trudge back to its long moody sections.

The interaction among the characters is the same, but above all, the drawing style is the same: the main character of Roots looks really like Sasuke of Naruto, both in drawing and mind.

Both have an RPG-ish kind of feel (.hack//Roots for obvious reasons) Similar soundtracks, landscapes, and character designs
