Doubutsu Olympic Taikai

You can't go wrong with animals doing funny stuff. It's a concept that transcends time and culture because it's fun to think about. The Animal Olympics is a short movie from 1928, and that's all I knew going in. I recommend it for the novelty alone, but the short is surprisingly funny and well made. The bits with the Elephant doing discus and Pig doing hurdles were hilarious. The chimp kept participating and messing with everything, not taking the games seriously. There is so much charm packed into 13 minutes, and I imagine if I watched this in 1928 I'd be thoroughly entertained as I ... was almost 100 years later. It's well worth a watch despite being completely silent and obviously not the pinnacle of animation.

Now this is how you do animal lympics the right way. Way better that the american Animalympics. It was cute, sweet, adorable, animated perfectly. I do miss the voice acting, and I know I complain a lot about missing voice acting in the first animes, but it is a bit annoying that some do have voice acting, or music, and then the next is complete silent film. The animation is quit beatiful, although a bit janky at time. There is also a bit of a weird cut. And I guess they wanted to capture the feeling of one of the earlier modern Olympic games, ... which the videos are also silent, which they did perfectly, but still, missed voice acting.

Story
Overall a great job. However, it was a tad contradicting. The wording used showed they wanted to be spot on with the truth. As indicated by "sportMANship" was replaced with sportBEASTship. However, they decided to go with a cartoonist approach. Which meant taking in realism like reality was out of the question. That was a slight issue on contradicting. The main one was the ending. Without much in terms of spoilers it involved was could be seen as a balloon but turned shortly into an anvil. ... A significant difference in weight. They did it for a final laugh but for me was rather foolish.

-background was nicely done. Not skipped out on. Also depending on the scene the background it even played into the cartoon.

Sound- a silent production could be improved with a remake including animation sound and voice.

Character- not relevant

Enjoyment: Despite the general issue i had of realism i found the animation to be a delight. Using the cartoon aspect they turned what you would think would happen into something different. An excellent idea for that act stopped you from knowing what was going to happen. In other words kept your interest levels in check. However, if this was not your typical idea of a quick race try the anime Dankichi-jima no Olympic Taikai. That anime has a different spin on what makes a race.
