Sometimes, you just want to see cute characters suffer.
I think I got a good amount of anime here. So, I'm closing suggestions for the stack unless the anime is from the Summer 2023 season or newer. If you have an anime that fits that, send me a message and I'll check it out.

This is a part of a series of stacks that are about artistic tendencies in anime (and that border the fine line between sophisticated and pretentious).

Anime with dark/serious plots but with a bright colorful palette for most of the anime. Clear blue sunny skies and saturated colors are to be expected.

NOTE THAT THIS IS BASED ON AESTHETICS ONLY. That means, this has nothing to do with "Not what it seems" as some of these are dark from the beginning despite keeping a constantly colorful palette like Phantom Requiem for the Phantom or Summertime Render.

The plot gets considerably darker in season 2 yet it retains the appearance of season one, which isn't dark enough to make to this list.

Magical girl anime can be divided into 2 camps:

morning time magical girl: shows which air in the morning targetted at children (doremi, card captor sakura, etc)

late night magical girl: shows which air in the evening or late at night, targeted at adults.

Within those late night anime, some are simply raunchy comedy parodies, some are grimdark edgy interpretations, and some are what I would class as "otaku oriented magical girl", ie, shows which earnestly create a magical girl story line but targetted at otaku.

what counts in this final category is subjective, as the lines between types are blurry, so some of these items may fall somewhat into the grimdark or raunchy comedy categories, but here I try to list everything I think classifies as otaku oriented magical girl anime.

the strain of subversive magical girl-type anime in the age between Utena and Madoka.

"magical girl" in this case is used to loosely mean coming of age stories about girls given fantastic powers and having to use them to deal with introduced antagonisms, often with some analogous theme of transformation

magical girl anime have always grappled with intense feelings and situations, these are of the kind that are more "out there" in tone and form and structure. often quiet and somber, sometimes distressing and weirdly upsetting. not exactly a curation, more of a documentation. arranged by release
