Both series focus on a warriors code of conduct through a woman's point of view. These fantasy shows also explore aspects of war and contain both a shonen and military themed undertone. Furthermore, both leading ladies also teach their young male companion the path of becoming a warrior.

Both are about young guys striving to get strong enough to protect the ones they love. Kenichi is a little less well animated but on the plus side has a lot more romance, awesome martial arts teachers and comedy. So if you like training, martial arts and epic fights you may just cream your pants.
