Redline

Every five years, an exhilarating race called Redline is held, and the universe's most anticipated competition has only one rule: that there are none. Racers are pushed to their absolute limit—a feeling that daredevil driver JP knows all too well. Having just qualified to participate in Redline, he is eager to battle against the other highly skilled drivers, particularly the beautiful rising star and the only other human that qualified, Sonoshee McLaren.

But this year's Redline may be far more dangerous than usual—it has been announced to take place on the planet Roboworld with its trigger-happy military and criminals who look to turn the race to their own advantage. However, the potential danger doesn't stop the racers; in fact, it only adds to the thrill. Relying solely on his vehicle's speed, JP prepares for the event to come, aiming to take first place in the biggest race of his life.

I seriously can't fathom how a group of human beings came together and orchestrated this entire thing into existence. It's a masterpiece of art and creativity in every sense of the word. It's a shining example of why I continue to watch anime; because they boast the most unbelievably incredible works of art that can't be matched by anyone else on the planet. Seriously. Not to sound elitist, but once you've had the best, you just can't ever go back. These creators worked painstakingly on this film for almost a DECADE. HAND-DRAWING HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF FRAMES just so they could bring this one of ... a kind work of art to life. Very in tune with the film itself in which they didn't give up until the bitter end. And it most definitely paid off. It's animation at its finest. It's a testament to how the animation medium, especially Japanese animation, is in a league of its own and completely unmatched to other forms of storytelling. And it's a loud and proud statement that anyone who thinks AI can come even close to reaching the heights that this film managed to achieve is just ludicrously ignorant and simply doesn't care about art in the slightest. You have zero excuse not to watch it. It's an absolute must for the human experience.

Mixed Feelings

When a movie has ADHD: Redline. In the future there's a racing event where the cars have rocket engines and are allowed to shoot at each other and basically engage in combat. The event organisers decide to hold the final as an illegal incursion on a highly militarised planet with a hostile government.

The plot focuses on two racers JP, an egotistic hot shot with a greasy pompadour and Sonoshee, a beautiful young racer who wants to prove herself. There's a large cast of side characters including JP's mechanic and parts dealer, the other racers, the leaders of the Roboworld army and the race organisers. There ... is not a lot of character development, just enough to set up JP and Sonoshee as romantic interests and some background on the other racers and rivalries. JP's relationship with his mechanic Frisbee is also given some screen time and might be the most substantial character development.

The action scenes that take up the bulk of the movie are all insane and high speed. This effect is achieved partly by show many things at once that the viewer doesn't have time to take in the whole shot before it is over. Sometimes there will be a crowd of aliens on screen with so much going on that there is no way to focus on any of it. Other times, the cars flash by so quickly that it's hard to keep track of what's happening with each of the drivers.

The animation is garishly colourful, with thick outlines and crowded chaotic frames. The characters are allowed to distort and bend like cartoon characters. The same goes for the cars that warp and bend with speed and stress.

If you're in the mood for something chaotic and silly but with a large serve of frenetic racing action, then give Redline a look.

Redline is a nothing burger. You may as well just watch Nascar, because this movie is empty. It's a race, between what amounts to faceless competitors, because, they have nothing to add to this movie, except being drivers for a race. The movie fails at establishing anything of value for our characters, and their story. The characters are bad, lifeless, and boring. Redline is not an 8.28/10. It is a shallow movie that is animated beautifully, that is it.

Animation 10/10
- Its gorgeous, incredible detail, great character design, and a crisp look.
Sound 10/10
- Great sound design, good ... VA work, mixes well with the theme.
Story 1/10
- It's a race. There is nothing more to this movie.
Characters 1/10
- Hollow characters, boring characters.
Enjoyment 4/10
- I liked the animation, the race itself was just okay.

If you want to witness peak animation, with great detail, yes, you should watch this movie. If it matters to you whether a movie has any story or good characters, then don't bother with Redline.
