To qualify for the list, the manga had to be at least 15 years old when the anime came out. Organized in ascending order by length of time between manga and anime. Each manga can only be accounted for once, so no remakes - those go on a separate list.

I just want to list some shows which show a little more explicit violence, please bear in mind that this list is not supposed to give you (only) pure splatter or even shows where the brutality is the focus. Hope you enjoy!

In film, "dark fantasy" is a subgenre that blends traditional fantasy elements with darker, often disturbing or frightening themes, exploring moral ambiguity, and featuring supernatural horror and potentially grim or gritty settings.

Blending Genres:
Dark fantasy, also sometimes called "fantasy horror," combines the fantastical elements of traditional fantasy (magic, mythical creatures, etc.) with the horror elements of suspense, fear, and sometimes gore.

Dark fantasy often delves into darker themes, such as:

Moral Ambiguity: Characters may be morally grey, or the line between good and evil can be blurred.

Existential Dread: The stories can explore themes of despair, loss, and the potential for darkness within humanity.

Corruption: The world or characters may be corrupted by dark forces or their own desires.

Supernatural Horror:
Dark fantasy often features supernatural creatures, such as vampires, werewolves, or other monsters, but these creatures are not always presented as purely evil.

Grim and Gritty:
The settings and tone of dark fantasy films can be grim, gritty, and even violent.

Note: As a dedicated enthusiast of dark fantasy, I often find it challenging to discover series that fulfill my cravings for this genre. My goal is to curate a collection of dark fantasy shows that can be enjoyed by both myself and the wider community.
