Mashle: Shinkakusha Kouho Senbatsu Shiken-hen

After Mash Burnedead's clash with Magia Lupus, the secret about his powers is now out in the open. The short-lived celebration ends when the Bureau of Magic summons Mash before an audience of Divine Visionaries, who collectively decree Mash should reap the consequences and die. However, an evil shadow organization called Innocent Zero hijacks the inquiry to demand that Mash be kept alive.

Mash proves that he is capable of dealing with Innocent Zero, but the Divine Visionaries' verdict remains unchanged. Luckily, Mash finds unexpected allies in Divine Visionary Rayne Ames and Headmaster Wahlberg Baigan, and they successfully defer his execution until Innocent Zero is defeated. Mash is now allowed to live under one condition: he must be selected as the Divine Visionary candidate by the year's end.

Mashle: a perfect example that sometimes the heart of a show and a great soundtrack can be more important than plot or depth.

Honestly, i watched the whole show in one go so this is less a review of the second season and more of the show as a whole. At first this show annoyed me. It seemed to be more or less Harry Potter but with more eugenics, an extremely OP mc, and less good character and story writing. Mash (the mc) is a very one note character. He likes cream puffs and his loved ones. He's seriously as dumb as a doorstop and extremely ... dense borderline purposely obtuse. What teenager can't open a damn door without breaking it because every single time he doesn't know if they're push or pull doors??? He's overconfident to a fault and yet is so ridiculously overpowered to the point that he's constantly validated for it. Quite frankly, these gimmicks stop being funny by episode 4-5 of season 1 and just become deeply annoying. He does however have two redeeming qualities in my eyes: his kindness and fierce loyalty to protect those who are not as strong as him. This brings me to the main thing i love about this show: Noblesse Oblige.

The main takeaway from this show is the concept of Noblesse Oblige: the inferred responsibility of privileged people to act with generosity and nobility toward those less privileged. Or simply put, the strong were given their power to protect the weak. I will admit that i'm fully biased about this, but it truly is what i love most about the show. There are so few people on this earth and in this show that still follow noblesse oblige and it's heartwarming to see even such simpleminded characters stick to it so fiercely. Noblesse Oblige seems like a lost concept to many in this day and age even in anime, so it does make me happy to see it.

The villain of this show is honestly just cartoonishly evil from what i can tell so his fights get boring. The fights in general get boring because we know how OP Mash is and it ruins the stakes of each fight. To be quite honest, that aspect of the show is almost more annoying than the characters or obvious Harry Potter rip offs. Truly the only thing that kept me watching and enjoying this show was the very fun opening by Creepy Nuts and the heart in it.

If there will be a 3rd season, i would watch it. If you want to watch a show with no real stakes and where the mc just punches everything into oblivion, i recommend One Punch Man instead. The comedy and character writing are far better. The reason I recommend this show is because i feel it can teach people a lesson in selflessness and not discriminating against others. Plus i think it's something fun you can put on in the background while you do other things and you won't feel as though you've missed much at all.

Mixed Feelings

I mean... It's fine. It has some moments when the comedy kinda works but it really wants to be a fight anime and the fight animation is really bad. Lot of static pans, no real fluidity or sense of weight. If you're looking for an anime to scratch your fighting itch this isn't it. If you're looking for an anime to scratch your comedy itch this isn't it.

If you're looking for an anime that features people constantly monologuing and expositing in your face rather than progressing the plot, character arcs or basic action? Oh man, this is the anime for you!

Season three needs to really ... lean into the comedy or it needs to really ramp up the fight quality because this isn't it.

Mashle: Shinkakusha Kouho Senbatsu Shiken-hen

Another example of how a good comedy doesn't need a serious or real plot.

Magic and Muscles was one of the most creative series you can find and definitely something many would have wished for. We have a world very similar to Harry Potter, a silly and super strong protagonist and perfectly spiced macabre silly humour.

That was the recipe for success, nothing more. The writer should have kept exactly what we had in the first season. The pacing was decent, the story was amusing and everything had a well-built joke at the end. Instead in the second season they had ... to build up a shounen and give 2 episodes long fights for the enemies.

Not only that, the pacing was disastrous. The scenes dragged on forever, especially the final fight. It was just mediocre, that's all there was to it. In particular, the plot and sequence was extremely clichéd and there was hardly any humour.

Magic and Muscles was an anime that I could watch 4 episodes a day. It ended with me needing 4 weeks to finish the second season, it was so disappointing and boring. And that can really break your heart after the successful first season.
