Both movies are the point of view of a mother (Chocchan/ Cho Kuroyanagi) and her daughter (Totto-chan/ Tetsuko Kuroyanagi). The time period represented are different as Totto-chan's centers around her school life from ~1941 to ~1944 and Chocchan's starts when she meets her husband in 193~. Both of these movies are adapted from Tetsuko Kuroyanagi's biography and Cho Kuroyanagi's autobiography.

Both as set in historical Japan just before WWII with autobiographical source material. Both are very sober in their portrayal of both the characters and the society around them in the reaction to the war, even if it's viewed from very different angles.

Two coming of age stories set in the 40s-50s with a genki protagonist and a realistic tone, even if Totto-chan is autobiographic and Mai Mai is fiction. Both contain a nice look into the society at that time and the various challenges children had.
