The yuri anime genre unfortunately has a reputation for creating relationships between female characters that are incredibly ambiguous. This is a list of anime in which the romantic/sexual relationship between the two girls is very clear (and not one-sided). The girls in question should be major characters and their relationship should be one of if not the biggest driving point(s) of the show. No hentai titles, as adding even one would get the whole list marked nsfw. Some representation on this list is better than others, and I have provided an opinion under each title.

The “senpai” is either an older student or a more experienced employee.

The “kouhai” is either a younger student or a less experienced (or new) employee.

Most of the time, it is the school version.

In romance, the way it usually goes is that the kouhai will develop strong feelings of admiration and loyalty to the senpai, and it will evolve into romantic feelings. Western anime fans often refer to this as “I want senpai to notice me”. Sometimes, senpai does notice them, and, sometimes, they enter a romantic relationship.

This is a unique kind of relationship in Japan that is seen in Japanese media.

It is common in yuri, especially yuri for the shoujo demographic.

-being written by a woman doesn’t mean it won’t have fanservice
-being written by a woman doesn’t mean it won’t have elements which could be considered offensive
-the primary staff of most anime is men, and most anime is directed by men
-the sexual orientation of manga artists, light novel authors, and anime staff are generally kept private
-“who exactly wrote this?” isn’t always an easy question to answer. Let’s say there was a card game, then a manga, then an anime. Who would you credit, in that case?

In my opinion, people make assumptions about anime written by men and anime written by women, and those assumptions are only sometimes true. I do find that anime written by men and anime written by women feel “different”, but not in the ways that people tend to expect it when asking for shows written by women.
