Sora wo Kakeru Shoujo

Uchuu no Stellvia and Sora Wo Kakeru Shoujo each feature a female protagonist in a space setting. In both series, she is simply a school girl but ultimately plays an important role in shaping the lives of others. 

In both series, there's the theme of science fiction involving a group of young girls. There are some strange interactions between them that sometimes range from comedic to serious, but all in all in handy. Both series have similar animation styles as well as similar themes. There's also plenty of action to go along with it and involves these young girls in various events against certain adversaries along the way.
