Both are in the same Era and are about love.

Both are set in Edo period in a heavily historical setting. This anime does draw inspiration from the tales of Hikaru Genji, who is the main portrayal of Genji Monogatari. Both anime follows somewhat poetic storyline, very common in stories of the Edo period. The culture of the time period is the main setting behind both anime.

Both are based on stories over 1,000 years old and don't utilize the typical animation styles from most anime. Both use watercolors. Also, both stories are set around the same time periods.

Both have well-rounded characters and historical aspects. Shouwa is about storytelling and the Tale of Genji is the first written novel story. Both have a relaxing but somewhat dramatic atmosphere with adult themes [josei demography]. Both series are greatly underrated. No annoyingly loud characters or cheap fanservice. Mature comedy and well-sculpted plot.

When watching both series it feels like you are reading some piece of classical Japanese literature. They are both dedicated to politics and mystery, though Genji is certainly has much more of romantic mood; meanwhile Seirei no Morbito is more about action and mysterious creatures. Background for both series is ancient Japan and both princes are deprived of any rights for throne. If you like esthetically charged Genju Monogatari you have to watch Seirei no Morbito as well.

Both are in the same era and are about romance, although Genji is more slow and mature, HarukaToki Maihitoyo is greater.

School Days is the modern version of Genji Monogatari Sennenki. Both main characters commits adultery on more than four different females and later gets punished.
