A calm small town vibe with co-existing yokai.

Family and friends. Two beautiful, tear-jerking stories about the importance of these things in the lives of people, which are sure to be highly liked by lovers of innocent yet tear-heavy plots.

While not very similar in terms of plot, these two anime are great for people with an interest for (rather cute) youkai and who like worlds in which humans and youkai coexist to a degree. They also share VAs for one of the main characters.

One of the characters of Tonari no Youkai is very similar both in profession as in vibe to Ginko from Mushishi. This part of the show feels much like Mushishi. But be aware, the majority of Tonari concentrates on other stories and give off a different vibe.

The same cozy, fantasy atmosphere. Both in the Iyashikei style, with a very pleasant, slow pace in the way they tell the story. Both take place in a rural Japanese environment where magic and beings from Japanese folklore are normal.

Two slice of lifes with a talking cat living within a family of humans. ME isn't about youkai living amongst humans but there are references of Mikan perhaps actually being a nekomata which Buchio would turn into within TnY. Main difference would be that Mikan is hiding the fact he can talk human-language whereas Buchio doesn't need to hide this. The stories are different but they are similar with their light-hearted and heartwarming moments amongst some serious things that occur within them, although ME is a lot more comedic and in nature throughout compared to the fairly heavy lore of TnY has as it progresses.

Two fantasies set in Japan where humans live with supernatural mythical beings, where TnY has both cohabiting whereas the mythological beings in UK are kept a secret, but both do have tengu and shapeshifters (tanuki in UK and nekomata in TnY) amongst the main focus too. They both revolve a fair bit around family and they have this very authentic Japanese divinity feel to both shows too. They have their equal bits of serious drama mixed in with light-hearted warm moments within both.

Japanese folklore-inspired supernatural beings interact with humans in a softer way than their origin myths. A blend of sweet summer nostalgia and sadness, longing, and explorations of death.

Tonari no Youkai-san is like Durarara but with the theme, pacing and setting of Natsume Yuujinchou. Multiple characters and plots with an ever explanding scope that keeps pulling in new elements in a seemingly boundless way.
