Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha: The Movie 1st

Both are spin-offs from a Visual Novel (Nanoha - Triangle Heart and Illya-Fate) taking a secondary character and making her a Mahou Shoujo. While Nanoha as a franchise is much better still Prisma has many Nanoha references . 

The Lyrical Nanoha franchise and Symphgear franchise runs the same heritage and vibes. Mecha-ish henshin heroine, glorious fights, and indomitable determination of a powerful female protagonist. The script writer of Symphogear also assisted in working on the two PSP games of Nanoha. 

Both are about a girl and her newfound powers (ninja gadgets in Black Fox, magic in Nanoha) fighting against a dangerous mad scientist who would use their own daughter to accomplish their goals. Lots of action in both. 

Shinbo may not have had a part in the Nanoha movie. But he was the director of the original Nanoha TV series. Keizo Kusakawa was an understudy of Shinbo at the time, and then took over with the rest of the Nanoha series including these movies. Both anime introduce a unprecedented amount of maturity and violence to the Magical Girl genre. Madoka being written with an objective to shock and awe with a graphic nature and complex story, while Nanoha focuses on a more subtle approach of a mature emotional narrative and intense action. Nanoha Second A's continues the series with an even better showing than the first.  read more 

Both well put together retellings of action packed series. Nanoha is more manly though.  

Both feature a rivalry between two main characters and spectacular air duels.
