One Piece Movie 06: Omatsuri Danshaku to Himitsu no Shima

"If you are a pirate among pirates among pirates among pirates, then gather your steadfast crew of friends and set sail for our island." Upon finding an advertisement with these words on it for Omatsuri Island, the only recreational resort on the Grand Line, Monkey D. Luffy and his Straw Hat Crew set out for it immediately.

Enticed by the island's casinos, spas, beautiful women, and exquisite cuisine, the crew are eager to relax and enjoy themselves. Much to their disappointment though, they are told upon arrival that they will first have to pass Baron Omatsuri's "Ordeals of Hell." Once they complete this series of challenges, they will be able to enjoy the resort.

However, problems begin to surface the longer they stay on the island. As strange events continue to unfold, the Straw Hat Crew find themselves at odds with one another, disagreeing at every turn. Will the Straw Hat Crew be able to figure out the truth behind Omatsuri Island, or will they fall apart from infighting first?

One Piece and psychological horror? Two things I never thought I'd hear in the same sentence, but here we are.

I was first introduced to Baron Omatsuri and the Secret Island when I saw clips of some of it's creepiest moments; it seemed interesting and equally horrifying, so I came into the movie with high expectations. I'd be lying if I said I enjoyed the entire thing though. I was definitely underwhelmed for the first half of the movie; which was reminiscent of the Long Ring Long Land arc, that was ending around when this movie was released.

The bait and switch storytelling really caught me. The ... lighthearted first half of the movie leads you to believe the rest of it will be the same, until the mood changes; fast. It goes from being a typical story of the Straw Hats having a fun adventure on an island, to something more like an apocalypse. The second half of this movie made me unsettled in a way I never could've expected.

The main themes that this movie really portrays are friendship, betrayal, and decay. Slowly, quietly seeing the villain change the Straw Hats as characters is the element that really disturbed me. As psychological horror goes, there are no real jumpscares, ominous soundtracks, or anything you'd expect from a typical horror movie. Which in my opinion, makes things even scarier. This movie slowly but surely fills you with a sense of dread, and when you least expect it.

So, does One Piece work with horror? Yes. Although I didn't like the entire movie, it got the job done in making me more disturbed than I ever could have expected when coming into it. 9/10.

Mixed Feelings

Call me a cheater, but I saw this movie without seeing the whole anime first. Why? Because I heard the animation was ambitious & the story was darker/different from regular One Piece. Truth be told, I've seen a handful of episodes with my One Piece-addicted friend, & it felt like torture. I gave this film a chance in hopes that it was "unique".

The main driving force that carried me through this journey was the art. The character designs often annoyed me because of how god-awfully ridiculous they looked; though, others may find it humorous. However, the backgrounds were nicely detailed, & the characters moved fluidly, ... especially Luffy with his noodle arms. Some creative animation techniques & odd CGI are thrown in, but they mix better than water & oil.

So, is the story dark? Kinda. If we were to place every dark anime on a spectrum, this movie would hang on the lighter end. Something like "Kiss x Sis" is way more disturbing & will make you cry at the monitor. This, however, has very few dark themes that are honestly tame enough to belong in a kids' cartoon. I got no clue why some people think this film is so dark, unless they're children. If you've got guts, you can handle this movie better than medicine.

The overall plot is still interesting, despite any shade I seemingly threw.

Don't even get me started about the characters. Some of them are somewhat fine, but most of them are goddamn boring or plain annoying! The character Sanji seems to only enjoy bickering with Zoro about useless shit, or flirting with Nami & Robin. Strangely, whenever he flirts, he speaks very quietly like that'll get him any attention; it comes off as stupid rather than funny.

Robin doesn't talk much; I dunno if that makes her uninteresting, because I hate how much the cast talks. There's barely ever a moment where peace & quiet exists, if you don't count the opening scene & end credits. The director somehow managed to cram dialogue into every millisecond, when visual cues or basic knowledge could've explained the situation perfectly.

For example, there's an elderly midget who's fully introduced to Luffy's crew & later faces them off; however, he feels the sudden need to introduce himself again around the end of their fight. He doesn't do it just randomly either; he says it like we're supposed to be absolutely shocked. Who does that? Imagine you meet a kid named Conner. You both start fighting for three seconds, & as you're weaving past his throws, he announces the terrifying words, "I'm Conner". Then, you realize it's unnecessary to fight a goldfish with a three-second memory span.

Speaking of three-second memory spans, I wish I had one to forget most of the audio. As mentioned before, I hate the overabundant dialogue, & that distaste is amplified by a few things:

1) Too much yelling. Here's a tip, loud doesn't equal funny. Screaming my ears off won't make me wet myself.

2) Mega high-pitched voices that rival Alvin & the Chipmunks. Seriously, Chopper sounds like he inhaled six balloons & managed to keep the helium inside his body forever. His 100 Gecs-like voice downplays the serious tone of the dramatic scenes.

3) Voices which belong to aliens who can't comprehend normal human speech. Gappa often speaks like this: "Hello there pu. How are you doing pu? Why do I keep saying pu? None of your business pu. I bet you're mocking me pu! Pu pu pu pu!" GAAHHH, I hate that shit. Not to mention, he talks way too quietly like he's Billie Eilish—you don't have to design a unique character by making them speak Dumbass Language.

Is the sixth One Piece movie good? It depends on your maximum level of pain tolerance. Normal One Piece fans will definitely enjoy it, seeing as they willingly suffer through the over nine-hundred-eighty episodes. (I'm kidding.)

Though, for me, this film is only decent. The story holds up fine, & the animation is brilliant. Unfortunately, I just don't like the character writing. Perhaps, I should pry my eyes open & forcefully binge the anime to slowly learn why people like the characters so much... or nah.

I saw this movie expecting it to be great. It's often considered the second best One Piece movie, and that left expectations of greatness. What I found was a disappointing mess.

Art - The different style of this movie was refreshing, and interesting, but at points felt static, rather than dynamic. At many points, rather than looking like a world with depth, the scenes felt like cut outs, the characters were only pretending to interact with. Still, this was a decent, and interesting play around, and it certainly wasn't bad.

Sound - Decent. Not my area.

Character - The characters are, more or less, those we've come ... to love. They were slightly misused in the film, but were same old good. The new characters were also, in some regards powerful, particularly Sir mustache.

Story - Oh, the story. This film was basically an attempt at character-expression. The story was mostly just a framework to give a message of friendship, but it was so terrible done. Most of the movie felt pointless at the end. I had no idea why certain things were going on, as they lacked any reasoning, or explanation in the narrative. Overall, it felt like they were banking on the characters, but they were misused to hammer home a message that doesn't fit, and doesn't even work that well with the story given. A lot of characters are essentially scenery given too much detail.

So, if you want to watch 'em all, see it. If you're more interested in whether it's a good film, I'd give it a miss.
