Tonikaku kawaii is among my most favorite animes of this season. I fell in love with it when I first read the manga. And I found myself falling in love with the anime the same. I extremely adore the anime and think it really captured the essence of the manga, and expanded on it without sacrificing anything. It may not be a perfect show, but it was really kawaii. The same can`t be said for the RECAP episode. I really think this is a bad recap episode. I was straight up uninterested and didn`t feel what ever it wanted me to feel.
The recap episode,
...
titled as episode 12.5, retells certain parts of the anime, and about the relationship of the protagonists. They
The retailing is presented as a simple narration (by I think NASA-chan`s father. why, I don`t know)? I really wish they would give the episode more narrative basis. Like structuring it as a collection of thoughts of the characters, what they think about these different events.
The pacing also seems really off. There is no logical order to these scenes, apart from vague concepts like REALLY EXCITED, REALLY PARTICULAR. Which while makes some sense, does not however compel or interest me in one bit. They also thought that it was a good idea to cut and not show most of the scenes in their entirety. The episode cuts to the next scene, before the current scene is wrapped up.
Unlike in the actual episodes, these events have no build-up or waiting period for them to be effective. And because a lot of them are cramped in this one episode, I found myself not feeling the joy that I felt while watching the episodes.
Anyway, you get the idea. I know that it is hard to do a recap episode right, but this felt that they didn`t even try. This episode has very little point to it. Perhaps it exists as a goodbye or a re-entry point when and if a season 2 happens. But this anime retells so little and in a very dire way, that I don`t think this is a sufficient retelling of the anime or the story. I recommend re-watching the anime, if you forget and want to re-watch or re-experience the anime.
But I will say, despite me having so many issues with this episode, I could not help but like and enjoy it. I was never bored or looked at my clock while watching it. The reason being that the anime was so effective in imprinting and making us connect with the characters and their relationships, that I can feel its impact even here, despite there being no narrative hook in place, no order, no consistent pace, or many of the things that made the anime great. I did smile when I saw and recalled different scenes of the anime. And I can`t say a didn`t enjoy the expertise, even if I dislike the episode. If any good came out of this episode, it was that it made me further adore the show. This feeling is what kept me smiling throughout the episode.
But it is what it is. That all I think about this episode. Thanks for reading. Goodbye and take care.
