Real robots are a subgenre of the mecha genre, in which the mechas are depicted as realistic warmachines as opposed to the superheroistic depiction of the super robot subgenre. It was started in 1979 by Mobile Suit Gundam.

Some 80s anime with openings I really like. I'll probably add more to the list with time.

This is a part of a series of stacks that are about artistic tendencies in anime (and that border the fine line between sophisticated and pretentious).

This stack is a work in progress.

I tried to make this list using mostly lesser-known fanservice-free anime. Most of these make the list based on having MAL ratings lower than PG-13 or having clean ratings for no sexual content or nudity on doesthedogdie.com. Some of the selections in the list do have fanservice in the original Japanese version that was omitted for the Western release.

I, and I suspect many others, have fond memories of Robotech. I understand MAL rules and accept the fact Robotech does not qualify for entry here. Still...

When I first watched the series, I had no idea of the studio relationships, development history, production woes, and legal entanglements. This stack sheds some light through reference to YouTube explainer videos. Searching YouTube for Robotech will turn up a bunch of videos, several of which go through the troubled history of the franchise. Everyone seems to agree on the general facts surrounding the various people and events but each has its own perspective.

MercuryFalcon 27K subs: "... lawsuits, scandals, broken promises, tax fraud, embezzlement, unpaid royalties, Swiss bank accounts, and statutes of limitation." Robotech playlist:

RetroBlasting 119K subs: Plenty of nostalgia for the 1980s, plenty of hate for Capt. Gloval. Robotech playlist:

Secret Galaxy 385K subs: Part 5: licenses normalized, Robotech live action???

Robotech not on MAL:
-- Robotech
-- Robotech the Movie
-- Robotech II The Sentinels
-- Robotech The Shadow Chronicles

(Somehow, 85 episodes of Robotech have been on YouTube for over 6 years.)

(Somehow, Robotech the Movie remastered in 1080p has been on YouTube for over a year.)

(Somehow, Robotech II The Sentinels Re-mastered has been on YouTube for over 4 years.)

If you watch any of these videos, the YouTube algorithm will likely recommend more Robotech content for your viewing pleasure.

Before Gundam became a heavyweight franchise in 1985, there were several mecha anime in the early 80s that had more engaging, serialized stories and realistic, complicated characters and worldbuilding, but still shared a lot of similarities with 1970s mecha anime. This is a list of such mecha anime.

Tired of adaptions, reboots, and remakes in your sci-fi anime? Frustrated that MAL doesn't allow you to filter by source material? Well, this list has you covered.

For the sake of including as much as I could, I've only listed one entry from each franchise/series (generally the first installment). Some entries have a manga that came out shortly before they premiered, but those aren't really adaptions since the production of the anime predates creation of the manga.

Robotech is an American 85-episode adaptation of three unrelated Japanese anime television series (from three different fictional universes) made between 1982 and 1984 in Japan; the adaptation was aired in 1985.

The series is divided into three chapters or sagas:

Robotech: The Macross Saga (Episodes 1-36) (Adapted from Super Dimension Fortress Macross TV series).

Robotech: The Robotech Masters (Episodes 37-60) (Adapted from Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross TV series).

Robotech: The New Generation (Episodes 61-85) (Adapted from Genesis Climber MOSPEADA TV series).

Continuing after the original series:

Robotech: The Movie (Adapted from Megazone 23 Part 1 OVA film. It also uses footage from Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross TV series.)

Robotech: Love Live Alive (Adapted from Genesis Climber MOSPEADA OVA Love, Live, Alive).
