The Animation Film Award (アニメーション映画賞) is an award given to the best animated feature film at the Mainichi Film Awards. The award was established to reward large scale cinematic animation, enabling the Oofuji Noburou Award to focus on shorter pieces. This award was first presented in 1989 for Kiki's Delivery Service by Hayao Miyazaki.

Classic 20th-century series and films that most old-school otaku have heard of and many older fans will cite as the reason they became a life-long weeb in the first place. Some have gotten sequels or modern reboots, while others have been relegated to the past and stand alone as fondly-remembered products of their time. SBS - the free to air channel with actual international content that everyone either spends 5 minutes watching or 3 hours watching, no in-between. They used to air a fair bit of anime alongside their normally scheduled programming, and you might even be able to catch a few Ghibli films every now and then today.

Titles in which the characters are piloting flying devices (planes, brooms, etc) within the atmosphere. The characters being pilots is relevant to the plot, and during a big part of screen time there is action in the air.

Added one title per franchise.

Shows where there are characters that pilot airplanes, shows that just have some airplanes appear on them don't count.

Dieselpunk is a retrofuturistic subgenre of science fiction that combines the aesthetics of the diesel-based technology of the interwar period through to the 1950s with retro-futuristic technology.

Zima Entertainment is a Mexican distributor dedicated to distributing movies and series in theaters and home format, mainly only in their original language with subtitles. In this list you will find all the animes that they have distributed, both in home format and movie theaters.

♥ According to Anime News Network, Zima distributes Millennium Actress in Mexico but it was never released in home format, it's still on this list for a reason. The film was released in theaters by Arcade Media for a limited time, and was dubbed for television, specifically for Paramount Channel and later on Cinecanal.Possibly Zima together with Arcade had the film dubbed for television, but it was never released in home format by Zima (and by no one) in Mexico.

Anime that comes packaged with socio-political commentary. Sometimes as subtext or metaphor, sometimes screamed out loud with abandon.

Romance standalone movies that have clean and crisp animation. While some series do have other related entries, it’s possible to watch this without any prior knowledge which is why I included them in this stack. I hope you enjoy!

These series / movies are great to start with and don't require a lot of effort, like saying chill (ok maybe for evangelion no but ssshhh), they are divinely animated works.

Does not include movies closely related to an existing series (aka sequels/prequels/side stories) so you can watch everything in the list without watching a series prior to it.

Keep in mind, that the industry isn't that old yet and unlike normal Anime, the movie industry didn't explode in the last few years so these are basically all the good movies that currently exist.

Studio Ghibli is without a doubt the most popular Anime Movie studio and also the only one that created a lot of movies. I've excluded the few bad/mediocre ones so I recommend any listed here. The first 4 are generally seen as the best ones, the rest has no order.
