According to the Republic of San Magnolia, their ongoing war against the Giadian Empire has no casualties—however, that is mere propaganda. While the silver-haired Alba of the Republic's eighty-five sectors live safely behind protective walls, those of different appearances are interned in a secret eighty-sixth faction. Known within the military as the Eighty-Six, they are forced to fight against the Empire's autonomous Legion under the command of the Republican "Handlers."

Vladilena Milizé is assigned to the Spearhead squadron to replace their previous Handler. Shunned by her peers for being a fellow Eighty-Six supporter, she continues to fight against their inhumane discrimination. Shinei Nouzen is the captain of the Spearhead squadron. Infamous for being the sole survivor of every squadron he's been in, he insists on shouldering the names and wishes of his fallen comrades. When the fates of these young souls from two different worlds collide, will it ignite the spark that lights their path to salvation, or will they burn themselves in the flames of despair?

I must say I have put this anime off for quite some time because I heard it was based around global conflict and at the time I just wasn't into watching something like that. I am glad that I decided to finally watch 86 as I binged both seasons in the span of a day... IT WAS THAT GOOD. Good is not a good enough word to describe it.. IT WAS A MASTERPIECE OF STORYTELLING!!! Although at first the animation of the fight scenes reminded me of the spinoff Code Geass: Akito the Exiled I was pleasantly surprised with the story picking up where the ... animation was a little lacking. Sure you could say that it was a generic story of oppression BUT the character development and the story of the REAPER is where I say you should take a second look.

I give this serious story a 9/10, its animation an 8/10 and its character development a 10/10! It's hard to find series nowadays that have a good blend of everything. Most start out with a good balance then find themselves tipping toward one device or another and I am really glad 86 kept its balance! If you haven't checked it out I recommend you do! The story of the legion is heartbreaking yet so fascinating and you are missing out!

Mixed Feelings

A decent watch. You will like it if you eat up action packed brutal war show. The setting is interesting, I'd say its the strongest part about it, set in a spider mech world fighting against both the hive mind enemy as well as extreme racism. This story is about the friction of ideals against reality. The protagonist Lena is somewhat naive but still likable through the effort she exhibits and her journey through navigating against a rigid system that is hell bent on challenging her ideals is the crux of her story.

With that said, the kill count on the show is quite something almost ... to the point of "too bleak stopped caring", I won't say it ever becomes so because regardless of the bleakness of the situation it doesn't become truly hopeless, there is always a silver lining. But your mileage may vary. And the side characters though are competent but nothing to write home about, again you might differ on this.

All in all go for it if you like the setting and the production is also great (score by Hiroyuki Sawano too damn).

This show is really boring

Plot: 86 tries to be deep and profound but is actually as shallow as a puddle. Its not entertaining and captivating at all. Theres also too much talking and exposition which are completely irrelevant to the plot

Characters: Honestly speaking, i do not care for any of the characters in the show except lena and anju. Lena is cute and i like anju because of her va. Shin is too edgy and stoic for my liking. The author tried too hard to make him cool and badass but he is just cringe. The side characters are very generic and forgettable. I didnt ... feel anything at their death and backstory

Animation: The animation of this show is great. The fight scenes are great in terms of animation but lack depth and emotion. Shin fights some robots called legion and its really boring. Theres no strategy involved and we are not shown villian perspectives. It fails to captivate the audience

Music: Great music

Overall: Great show to watch it you want to fall asleep
