Art house, in relation to cinema, is a genre of films that are intended to be serious artistic works rather than merely popular entertainment but the descriptor can also be applied to anime. Furthermore, avant-garde refers to innovative, experimental, radical or unorthodox concepts and techniques. This can of course also be used in reference to anime and manga.

As MAL currently sadly only allows a max of 50 entries on interests stacks this list mainly prioritises the stand out and most high quality examples of avant-garde and art house anime television shows, feature films, OVAs and short film compilations. For a more comprehensive list which features the numerous experimental short films on the site as well as manga, I direct you to my accompanying Art house, Avant-Garde and Experimental club of the same name.

people tell me I have weird tastes. But I enjoy a good amount of series. I also watch alot that others havent seen, so I wanted to compile some good ones I have enjoyed that many may have not seen.
Some of these people have seen, but I feel like I rarely hear them talked about.

This list includes arthouse/avantgarde anime movies, so that's anything over 50 minutes, for example: Angel's Egg, Mindgame, Belladonna of Sadness.

The criteria here is simple: Anime released in 2001 or earlier, with under 25,000 MAL Members, and which I've rated a 6 or higher.

A rating of 6 counts for this second Obscurities list given the increased obscurity. A 6 is still an alright score. I've excluded anything that's particularly well-known, like Speed Racer or Voltron, despite both meeting my criteria.

It is perhaps worth noting that I rate things entirely on gut feeling. It's just, "I like that, that was good, it gets a 7.", that's the whole process. I can also find enjoyment in just about anything and there's very little that bothers me.

Continuation of the first stack.

This should be about it.
While I could keep adding more by digging deeper, especially into the older stuff, or just adding even more mainstream titles... I feel like that'd be excessive - as I want to keep these stacks somewhat balanced and easy to digest for a broad range of people: whether you're someone who mostly watches modern anime or an oldhead that still has VHS anime.
As long as the person reading this is okay with something outside of their comfort zone - they will find something for themselves.

As the title says, I created a stack called "Avant Garde and the Weirdest Box", and some weird Anime was not listed in it, so they will be listed here. Of course, there will also be Avant Garde anime that are not popular or not known by many people.
Well it seems like the real weirdness never ends...

Despite what the title might suggest, this is a GOOD description. Sort of like saying "Underrated Gem" but the definition is more clear as stated below.

Sleeper hit anime are those that had a mixed/negative reception at the beginning or that failed at sales but with time they were receiving a cult status and a gradually better reception, some even turning highly popular.

Anime that either intentionally or unintentionally reach the uncanny valley.

Sometimes it is used to horrify the audience like the design of titans in Shingeki no Kyojin or the parade in Paprika, other times could be unintentional like Final Fantasy where they tried too hard for a realistic CGI or Aku no Hana's rotoscoping.

If you know of another anime that has some prevalent uncanny valley please tell me!

A list of 80s/90s anime OVAs and movies you may not have heard of. Some are good and some are bad, but the bad ones are of the "so bad it's good" variety. Think of this as the anime rack at an old video store.
