In most anime, when a main character dies, it either serves to some greater narrative purpose, or the other characters try to revive or reincarnate them. For example, in Attack on Titans, Eren's initial motivation was to swear revenge on titans after seeing his mother snapped in two. In Angel Beats as in the movie Colorful, the characters are given a second chance. In Orange, the premise of the characters magically getting a level from their future selves give them an opportunity to prevent the would-be death.

In the following anime, the death and subsequent grieving of death is the entire purpose in itself. The grieving is sometimes direct, other times metaphorical. It could involve, depending on how you interpret them, hallucinations or spirits. It could involve entire magical plots. But it is important for this list that the point of those magical plots must be a part of the grieving process itself, and that it wouldn't pivot to some grander purpose.

If you have any other entries that fit here, let me know.

The scent of the sea, the smell of chlorine from the pool, and the tears that roll down your cheeks. The sea is as abundant as the sand. Below are animes where the MC is associated with the theme of water, or entities that belong to the sea. Water can be raindrops, the sea, the pool, and tears. It is the foundation of water that leads them to love, find purpose, compete, live or just have fun

This is a part of a series of stacks that are about artistic tendencies in anime (and that border the fine line between sophisticated and pretentious).

This stack is a work in progress.
