Evangelion Movie 3: Q

Fourteen years after the Third Impact, the Earth is a post-apocalyptic wasteland, human civilization is in ruins, and the people Shinji Ikari knows are almost unrecognizable. Trapped inside Evangelion Unit-01, he is recovered from space by Asuka Langley Shikinami and Mari Illustrious Makinami, only to find himself a prisoner of WILLE, a military faction led by his former guardian Misato Katsuragi. Cold and bitter, his former allies view him with suspicion and refuse to support him as he comes to terms with the consequences of his actions.

A hurt and confused Shinji is rescued from WILLE by Rei Ayanami and returned to NERV headquarters. There, he meets and quickly befriends the enigmatic Kaworu Nagisa, who offers him warmth and insight into the state of NERV's war with the Angels. But Shinji and Kaworu's brief respite lies on the eve of a new battle, one in which Shinji finds that his enemies are no longer Angels but former comrades. In this bitter confrontation to determine the future of the world, Shinji will learn first-hand that the past truly cannot be undone.

i cried myself to sleep, woke up dehydrated at 3AM and cried for another 2 hours. 💀 it's been 46 hours since i finished it and i still can't stop thinking about it jesus christ idk why it got to me so much but uh. yea.

the storyboards for this one are really interesting imo so i'd look them up if you have the time. there's a lot of scrapped content for it that i really wish we got to see fleshed out.

it had some very heavy queer undertones (as any shinji-kaworu interactions do), which might've been part of my struggle to process it ... as a queer person myself. this whole franchise really helped my find my own identity and seeing the parts i had so heavily fixated on get a whole film to themself was really surprising.

overall, a great and really emotional film for me. was pretty hard to follow, but i don't think anyone is actually watching eva for the plot, and the convoluted story didn't affect my enjoyment.

Mixed Feelings

I’m really conflicted about this movie. It strays far from being an alternative retelling of the Evangelion anime series and turns into something entirely different. There isn't a single scene that mirrors the original anime—everything here is completely new.

And to be quite honest, I can't decide if that’s a good thing or not. If this whole rebuild saga had been its own separate story rather than a rebuild, this would have worked much better, because the movie itself is quite good! But the plot takes such a strange direction that it almost feels like fanfiction of the original series, which is a bizarre feeling. There's ... a 14-year time jump for some reason, yet none of the characters have aged, which makes no sense at all. It's briefly mentioned and attributed to the "curse of the EVAS," but the movie doesn't bother to explain what that actually means. The only noticeable changes to the characters are new haircuts, a pair of glasses, or a cool eye patch, but that's it, nothing else has changed in 14 years. It all feels hard to believe, and it seems like this movie undermines everything the first two films in the rebuild saga had established. It breaks established canon, with characters behaving strangely, and some barely resembling their former selves.

Shinji is kept in the dark and cast aside, treated like trash and shunned by everyone. Then, they’re surprised when he rebels and chooses to escape what essentially amounts to imprisonment. It feels like Evangelion, yet somehow not at all—it’s hard to describe the strangeness of it all.

I actually enjoyed this when I looked at it purely as a movie. It’s a perfectly fine film that can be appreciated on its own terms. I wasn’t particularly fond of the heavy use of CGI, but that might just be personal preference. However, as a "retelling" of the Evangelion saga, it felt off to me because it strays too far from the original and presents the characters in ways that don’t quite align with what you'd expect. With all that being said, you can probably still enjoy this movie for what it is but I prefer the narrative of the original rather than the rebuilding.

This just seems to be a bad Action movie that barely has anything to do with either the series or the previous movies. First the exaggerated use of voices from the off just giving orders or randomly saying things in the background got out of hand for the first half hour of the movie and on my nerves. It was okay how they did it in the series or previous movies, even if not the best story-telling device, but they REALLY went overboard and overdid it here. You finally get to tell something new after years of essentially remakes and quasi-remakes, and you just let ... people yell pointless vaguely technical sounding gibberish from the off to overly flashy and equally pointless CGI effects for the entire first third of the movie while the viewer, similar to the now-collared Shinji doesn't know wtf is even going on? To top it off, the 3D Animation is worse than the more classic style in the previous movies and the new character designs and characters are kinda shit. By the point the piano thing and Shinji's romance with Kaworu started I was over it and just wanted it to end. Shinji becoming whiny again and developing into a used washrag by the end, not to say growing dumber than he's been in all previous material and throwing away his character building in the previous movie just put the lid on it.
