This will be a 2-part review, reviewing the piece as a standalone work and as an adaptation:
This BTTH Special is the first released by the new studio, taking over after the poor reviews of BTTH's original Season 1. However, despite being released before season 2, it is meant to be watched after Season 2 episode 2 and before episode 3. and character designs are much better than the previous studio and deserve much praise, however, since it is an early work, it is a bit stiff at times when it comes to action. Overall, it is a job well done and worth watching
Now, as an adaptation of the novel, there are some changes that I didn't really like. The interactions are nice and they really showed the kind of atmosphere that you could see in the novel. However, there were some changes in the overall special, mainly what happened after the aphoristic incident and the unneeded heroism at the end. I would have preferred the original novel plot for that (the heroism at the end was kinda cool but very different from what happened in the novel, I guess they are trying to up the emotional relationship between the two).
Adaptation score (how faithful to source): 7/10
